Hi,

I discovered Inkscape about a couple of days ago. Since then I am trying to learn it and have found it to be quite fascinating. I am learning it basically by watching a few videos on the youtube.

Today I got an idea while stumbling across the net. I found a website wherein the blogger has put up pictures of letters that were cut out from newspaper. So the letters were filled with newspaper print pattern. I would have posted the link to the site but it may be against the rules of this forum. Can this effect be achieved with the help of Inkscape ?

Yes it can
First, you will need an image of the newspaper. Once you have it on your computer, do File menu > Import. In the tiny dialog which comes up, choose Link if you will only view the image on your computer. But if you plan to take it to another computer (or you have the image on a flash drive/memory stick but the Inkscape image will not be saved on it)(or vice versa), you should choose Embed. (Or you may have some other reason, that I don't know about, to need to embed.) Next, with the newspaper image selected, do Object menu > Pattern > Object to Pattern.

Next, use the Text tool and type whatever text you want. Of course you'll want to use a heavy or bold kind of font (unless I misunderstood). Now go to Object menu > Fill and Stroke > Fill tab and click the Pattern button (blue and white checkered). That should do it!

I can think of situations where another technique might work better. So let us know how it goes. And....have fun
