Importing and saving color palettes.

Postby TSK » Thu Mar 12, 2009 8:21 pm

I just downloaded Inkscape the other day and have been wondering if there is any other way to import a color palette from Photoshop then to first somehow import it into GIMP and then copying the GIMP-generated file into the proper Inkscape folder? And is there no way of making a color palette in Inkscape itself?

I tried searching the forum for a thread on this subject but didn't find one. The only text dealing with this issue I've found so far has been this:
Inkscape uses the same file format for palettes as the GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP Colour Palettes, .gpl). To install a palette, copy the .gpl file to the share/palettes directory in your Inkscape installation.
Taken from the FAQ found on the Inkscape wiki.

Thanks in advance for any answers.

I don't think there will be any other way, since it's not like Photoshop can save it's palette in GIMP format.

That's correct--but it's not like nobody has thought of it or asked for it. It's simply that nobody has volunteered to develop it (yet).

Thanks for the quick reply. So, it looks like I'll just have to do it the hard way with GIMP.

File->Save as->Gimp Palette

This exports all used colors as GPL file.

What I meant was how to create a specialized color palette in Inkscape, not how to export an existing palette. I can't seem to be able to change colors in the palettes?

Cool! It would be a very welcome improvement.

I don't know how to save them, but you could easily create your palettes with Paletton service and export as a GIMP palette quite easily. I usually do this, since using this tool only the main color is needed and you can apply all sorts of rules and custom stuff.

If you want to try, go to paletton.com, configure your palette, then go to the color tables & export tab, then to color swatches, then choose the obvious. ;)
