I used Inkscape for 6 years and I have a lot of drawings in SVGs (around one hundred). I do not use some speciality in Inkscape. Finaly I realized that XARA Designer Pro 7 is much better for me as Inkscape.

I want to be able open all my drawings in XARA. Has anyone tested best combination of formats that suits the best possible conversion?

What is the best format to export in Inkscape and then to import in XARA?

To answer that, you'll first need to find out what XARA's native format is (if it has one), and also which formats it can otherwise open, import and/or export. In general, PDF seems to be a fairly univerally used extension. If it's a raster editor, I would think any raster format should be fine, and in that case, you'd use Inkscape's File menu > Export Bitmap, to create PNGs of all your SVGs. If Xara is vector, the orignal Inkscape SVGs may well be fine.

had a quick look at the specs. Xara Designer Pro is more geared to raster but does do some vector. Unfortunatelly it only supports export of SVG and not import. Your SVG files will need to be exported to PDF or EPS to get them into Xara program. However you will most likely lose some functionality of the original SVG, e.g. layers, transparency and filters come to mind.
Xara Designer Pro seems geared more towards photorealistic illustrations and web design. the other version of it is more suited to photo touch ups.

Actually Xara Designer Pro 7 is primarily a vector drawing program and has an extremely long history as such (see Computer Concepts' Artworks, Xara Studio, CorelXara, Xara Xtreme). The bitmap and website stuff has been added afterwards.

The new version 8 has the ability to import SVG.
