Help using a mask

Postby jaythesheep » Mon Dec 07, 2015 9:57 pm

Hey,
I tried adding a shadow to my vector, but I have no idea how to apply it so, that the shadow vector only applies on the group of objects.
How do I do that?

You will need a unified shape of the Pikachu for the mask.

So you select all the shapes that make up the body (and cover the shadow shape), duplicate and then 'Union'.

If you want to mask the shadow, the mask-shape must be white, but a clip would also work (in that case the colour doesnt matter).

When your mask is ready, select the shadow first, then include the mask with a shift click and apply mask.

But if I do that, this happens:

Yes, thats good. That shape is your Mask/Clip (well for a mask it has to be white).
Now select your shadow-shape, include the clip-shape and apply the clip.

Does that work ?

Doesn't really work. What do you mean with clip?
What I've done was duplicating pikachu -> union -> making pikachu white -> shadow layer on top -> create the mask
And nothing happened. Same result without making pikachu white.

Is there maybe another, easier method to apply such a shadow?

Well you can get the same result with a clip.
A mask works with black and white (white representing 100% transparency and black 100% opacity).

I think you are almost there: the shadow-shape has to be underneath the mask/clip.

Select the shadow first, then include the Pikachu-shape, do a right-click and chose 'Set Clip'.

Damn it, still doesn't work... Before I move on:
I used the same method for the black part at the ears and the brown part at the tail, but as you can see above, as soon as I unify it, the clip doesnt apply anymore...

The problem is your layers.
You have Pikachu on layer 1 and the shadow on layer 2 (beneath layer 1).
But you want the shadow on top ! Thats why it becomes invisible when you clip it. Because the clipped shadow lies underneath the body.

So what you have to do is go to your layer tab and move layer 1 one step down.

Then select all parts of Pikachu that you want to cover your shadow.
Thats the left ear, the head, the body, one arm and one foot.
Then you duplicate and 'Union'.

Move that clip-shape to the shadow-layer, by clicking Shift and 'Page Up'.

Then perform the Clip as explained above.

Hmm, damn. I must have accidentally included the clip of the ear into the Union for the new clip.

Can you fix that now on your own ?
