Motion Blur filter?

Postby Ayawisgi » Tue Mar 31, 2015 11:11 am

Hi,

I've been looking for a Motion Blur filter in Inkscape, similar to that in GIMP. In version 0.91 I do not have that filter, but on the following web page and in older threads there is mention of a motion-blur filter:

http://design.tutsplus.com/tutorials/sh ... ctor-23219

Was the motion-blur filter removed?

Is it possible to add additional filters somehow?

Were the motion-blur functions combined under Filters | Blurs | Blur?

Has anyone run across a good tutorial for motion blurs in Inkscape, or is a better workflow to do that in GIMP?

Thanks.

Hi.

I'm not familiar with filters in general, or the current 0.91, but that motion blur seems to me just a name for the same gaussian blur filter you can add with the fill and stroke panel.
If you click the link button in the filter editor, you can decrease one value to 0 for the effect, just as you can set up different gaussian blur values in x and y directions in gimp. Which is, not the same as a motion blur even if looking similar.

I fiddled with that blur setting, and I see what you mean, but I think it would still take some other tweaks to get the kind of rack/zoom effect I'm looking for.

I took another look at GIMP's filter and it's pretty effective, so I may just export to that when I'm ready to add the effect as a last step. (Although it's still odd that there used to be a Motion Blur in an earlier version of Inkscape. Why get rid of it?)

I'm not sure why it was removed. But you could either get it from one of your old files (apply to an object, and copy/paste into a new doc) or download one of the older versions. You can have as many versions of Inkscape as you want installed at the same time, as long as you don't install them into the same directory.

It may be that it still exists in 0.91, but perhaps has been incorporated into another filter, or maybe goes by a different name. If you're really interested in the answer to "why?" I would ask on the User Mailing List. Developers also pariticpate there, and will at least see the question. Maybe it was an oversight?

On my 0.48 there are separate entries for "Motion Blur, Vertical" and "Motion Blur, Horizontal". On 0.91 these appear to have been replaced with a common "Blur..." filter that lets you define the amount of horizontal and vertical blur individually (in 0.48 it wasn't possible for filters to prompt for parameters, hence the need for separate entries).

By setting one value to zero you can re-create the same effect as the 0.48 Motion Blur filters. But it's not, in my opinion, a very good "motion" blur - it's just a horizontal or vertical blur. If you want to give the impression of motion in a single direction it is possible using filters, but would need something more complex. If you can point us to an example of the "rack/zoom effect" you're looking for we might be able to reproduce it as an Inkscape filter.
