I am trying to use the new "relink to copied" command in the latest development build (pre-0.47), but can't get it to work.I am using the Mac OS 10.5 build.
What I do is, make an object. Clone it. Then make another object. Copy it. Then execute the "relink to copy" command in the edit>clone menu. But no relinking occurs. The clone is still linked to the original object. Is there something I am missing in how I am doing this?
As a side question, will there be a Mac OS 10.4 version of Inkscape 0.47? I don't see any other development build for the Mac except for the 10.5 build.
"relink to copied" not working for me
Re: "relink to copied" not working for me
Did you select the clone before choosing "Relink to copied"?

Re: "relink to copied" not working for me
Does relinking the clone to the object on the clipboard work for you when you change the X11 preferences as recommended in the FAQ? If the copy is created as a bitmap, relinking cannot work.
Re: "relink to copied" not working for me
prkos: do you know me? Because that sounds like something I might have failed to do.
But, yes, I did select the clone before executing "relink to copied." I failed to say so in my step by step of what I was doing.
~suv: Ah, great. That's it. Partly. (And it also solved another question I had about my copy and pasting creating bitmapped images instead of vectors. Thank you!) So now, since I changed the X11 preference for the pasteboard/clipboard as you suggested, I can "relink to copied," although, the relinked clone jumps to another position on my document page. My present reason for wanting to relink clones requires that the clones stay in place.
Anyone know if I can make it so the relinked clone stays where it was prior to relinking?
Note: if trying to execute the "relink to copied" command and the clone that is being relinked has a clip set on it, then the relinked clone appears in a different place on the page (as above), but also appears invisible but with a selection box around it. If deselected, the relinked clone disappears and is no longer selectable, but seems to be deleted. But, it's not deleted, but rather is still clipped, and can be seen again if the clip is released.

Re: "relink to copied" not working for me
It sounds like what you are experiencing isn't because it's been clipped, but it may be a bug (or just a feature) in Relinking clones https://bugs.launchpad.net/inkscape/+bug/251365
P.S. Often when I want to trace bitmaps nothing happens, then I realize the image wasn't selected

Re: "relink to copied" not working for me
prkos: oh, yes, you are correct that the moving of the relinked clone isn't due to the clip (if that's what you meant when you said "It sounds like what you are experiencing..."). The relinked clone was moving whether or not it was clipped. But, when clipped, the relinked clone was moving AND stayed clipped, which made it seem as if it had been turned invisible because it moved outside of the visible area of the clip. If the clip is released after the relinking, then the relinked clone becomes visible again.
I did find a way to get my relinked clones to stay put:
I align the object/path that I am relinking to with the object/path that was originally cloned. I do this alignment with the "align and distribute" dialog.
Then I do the steps required to properly perform the "relink to copied" command.
Doing this leaves my relinked clones in their position as I want them to be.
Thanks for everyone's help!
