first off, please excuse me if this is the wrong spot to post this.
Ok so I've been working on a graphics design for my dirtbike neck brace and I want to send it off to a printing shop to have it printed, the problem I'm running into is that the shop says it either needs to be in .ai, .eps, or .pdf.
I know in inkscape you can save files as .pdf or .eps , but he says he is receiving it in a .dat file when I attempt to e-mail it to him. So I've tried saving it as both .pdf and .eps when you choose to "save as" in inkscape, nothing is working so I'd really appreciate some advice!
Thanks,
Jake
Exporting My design from inkscape. Need help!
Re: Exporting My design from inkscape. Need help!
Hi.
This has nothing to do with Inkscape. The problem is located in the exchange server that your receipent have his mail account stored on. Settings have to be adjusted in this exchange server.
Or, if you using Outlook, there is a chance that it's your mail server that causes this.
It's like seven years or so since I had a similar problem when someone complaint they only get that fammous unreadable .dat file instead of the file I actually sent.

I am using Windows Vista and my mail service is through Yahoo. I just want to make sure that I'm doing everything correct so to go over it, first I create my design, then I go to the 'file' tab and go to 'save as', after I click that I got to the drop down box for the format and choose .PDF, then I go to my Yahoo mail and choose my file load it and send the email. Everything sound correct? I'm not missing anything am I?

After you choose PDF and click Save, you should be getting a small dialog with a few options. If you're not getting that dialog, something might be wrong.
When you say you load the file into the email, are you attaching the file, or pasting it into the message? Attaching it would be the proper way.
Maybe Grobe is onto something?

Yes there is a dialog but I do not know what settings to use for sure. And by sending it in the e-mail I do attach it not paste it. Whenever I moused over the file in the folder I saved it in it just said it was saved as a 'file' not .pdf, so what I did was open it though Foxit PDF reader then clicked 'save as PDF', now when I mouse over it it shows it is 'file type: PDF' so I believe it worked.
Re: Exporting My design from inkscape. Need help!
When you save as PDF in Inkscape, it should have .pdf extension, not anything else. So maybe something is going wrong with the export?
If you'd like to save some simple circle or something as PDF, you could attach the result to a reply. Then we could look to see what might be wrong. I probably won't know exactly what to look for, but someone else will. But at least I would try opening with Adobe Reader.
If you do get a proper export, I would look into Grobe's comments

I added the attachment, should be able to view it through a PDF reader. In my case I went to the file in the folder, right clicked and chose "open with" Foxit Reader. Everything seems to be working fine now

Yes, I can open that file with Adobe Reader. So the problem is solved?
