I'm a newbie to Inkscape (Illustrator convert). I like the various overlays in the Filters, but I am wondering how I can adjust some of them. For example, I have a solid orange rectangle, and then apply Colorize Turbulent. I'd like to control the color range used in the filter--can I do this?

If you open the Filters Editor (with the filter applied to something which is selected) you can edit the individual primitives which comprise the filter. Often the Flood primitive is used for coloring something, and it's a simple matter to select the Flood primitive and adjust the color. However, sometimes a matrix is used for coloring something, and I've never been able to figure out how to use a matrix (for anything).

Hhmm, I see that the Colorize Turbulent filter uses both a matrix and flood primitives. But it looks like the orange color comes from the Flood primitive. So just select Flood in the top-right section, and look below. Choose the Effect Paramenters tab, then click on the orange bar, and you can change that color. In this case, the matrix primitive isn't using the actual matrix, so possibly changing the option from the dropdown menu would help. Or if you actually know how to use a matrix, you could probably use it, if you wanted to.

I'm not sure how complex your filter use is (using more than one filter, perhaps?). But for me, the orange color doesn't come through. Whatever color I apply to the object is showing, and if I don't give a fill color, I don't see the filter effect at all.

So if my tips don't help, you might consider sharing the SVG file with us. Then we can see your specific situation, and give more specific suggestions.

Thanks! I got to the Filter Editor, adjusted the second flood, and changed some of the blends and got a nice result. I like the flexibility there, but MAN I've got a lot to learn about creating/editing filters. Woof.

Yeah, for those who have actually figured out how to make custom filters, they say the interface is less than desirable. There has been some talk about redesigning the editor, but I don't think it's anywhere near ready for release. I don't think there is any proposed re-design yet.

But so far I haven't figured out how to make a more complex one. I'm hoping a re-design happens before I decide to get serious about it, haha!
