Spacing with "Rows and Columns" dialog

Postby lopatec » Sat May 25, 2013 11:11 pm

Hi!

I have one question with Inkscape. When I have multiple rows (1,2,3,4) of schedule and I want them to be equaly distant from each other, I use "Rows and Columns" dialog. But the order of rows gets changed (2,1,3,4), which is undesirable (see attached picture).

How can I equaly space rows without changing the row order in Inkscape?

10x in advance :)

You could use the align and distribute panel instead of rows and columns.

Solution 1:
Create two text objects. One containing the time, and one for the text data.
Then align them to fit their base lines.

Solution 2:
Create each row of text and time as separate text objects, and again,
use the align and distribute panel.

Hmm, thank you for reply but I need those rows spaced to 10 pixels and in the same order as presented. So I group hours and descriptions so they can stay together. Then i try to space them to 10 pixels (no matter how big the used space is) and stay in the same order.

Can this be done with "Align and Distribute" panel?

Wondering if that might be a bug, I first tested with Inkscape 0.48.4 (Win7, 64-bit). If you click Arrange once, it does not reorder the rows. But after a 2nd click of Arrange, it does reorder the rows! I'm going to see if I can find any reports at Launchpad (likely aleardy reported, but I'll check).

Thought that you wanted the spaces between the groups equal as it is between the lines of one group.
If you draw like a 10 pixel high rectangle, you can use it as a spacer between the rows with the align and distribute.
I don't really get what exactly you want to achieve.

lopatec, I am able to avoid the reordering of the text by using Undo, rather than clicking Arrange for a 2nd or more time. (I think that's a bug, although I'm no expert about bugs.) But if you can manage to use Undo, in between attempts, you might not have to group the text.

I actually don't use Align and Distribute very often, so I'm not sure if it can space the rows to a specific amount. (Although I think not.) What I usually do, if I need text left aligned and equally spaced, is use either a Grid or Guides. The text has handles, which will snap to grid or guide, lines or intersections (once you set up snapping properly).

If I have a long list of text, sometimes I might use a grid, which could give both horizontal and vertical spacing/aligning. But if it's just a few lines of text, I might just use a guide line along the left, and then visuallly estimate the vertical spacing.

Off topic:
This is possible in the align and distribute dialog (Ctrl-Shift-A) but only if you have a development build, which is to say, the current stable version does not allow it but the next version very likely will.
You have to use the remove overlaps and enter 10 pixel spacing for the V field. Please look in the download link on the Inkscape home page for these builds.
Your mind is what you think it is.
