I tried to attach a png but it wouldn't let me, is that a bug?

You know, I've seen a few different messages with complaints about not being able to upload images of various different types. And I don't think it ever has been conclusively determined whether there might be a bug. In most or all cases, the poster has found other ways to display their image. But I'm not convinced there's not a bug.

I do know that only certain forums allow the uploading of attachments. But I think the error message doesn't say 'attachments not allowed in this forum', it says 'png is not allowed' (or whatever filetype it attempted to be attached). I should say this is what happened when I tried to attach a PNG to this message as a test just now. (I think attachments are not allowed in this forum.)

microUgly might clarify this some, but my recollection is that attachments ARE allowed in the WIP and Finished Work forums, as well as the Help forum. Other forums, I'm not sure about.

Edit -- Also, there's a limit on the size of the image file. But I don't remember what it is. I do seem to recall trying to upload something that was too big, and I think the error message did say it was too big, but I'm not positive. I might be thinking of trying to upload an avatar that was too large. I tried to find a big ol' BMP just now, and tried one that's 500+kb, and the error message said 'bmp not allowed'. But I'm not sure what the size limit is, so I'm not sure if the error message is appropriate or not.

The maximum image size is 256 kB.

Which area were you trying to upload the image?

From memory I only allowed uploading of image in the "General Inkscape Topics" forums. I didn't allow them in the "Show It Off" forums because I wanted to encourage people to use proper image hosting services where the images won't have to be deleted (each user only gets 50MB on this forum and if they fill it, they'll have to delete image to make room for newer images).

I wish phpBB was smarter about how it reported problems with attachments. Technically it should display the option when you can't upload anything anyway.

It was in Show it off > Work in progress, the image size was 11.8 KB.

Yeah, I was allowing attachments, but not allowing images... and since images is the only attachment you can use, it makes the attachment option useless. So I've changed the permissions around. I'm allowing image attachments in Work In Progress, but not in Finished Work (to encourage permanent hosting of the images). But the attachment option should not display when you can't attach an image anymore.
