Hi rosie, there is a chance that Inkscape automatically saved a copy at some point so you might not lose all of your work. When you reopen Inkscape look in your preferences dialog under Input/output, there should be a section for autosave. if it is enabled, the 'path' will tell you where to find the autosaved copies. The filename will tell you the time and dte it was saved. (e.g. inkscape-autosave-0-2012_08_07_00_26_17-001.svg).
Important! If it is autosaving you want to shut inkscape down and go to that location quickly, because once inkscape reaches the maximum number of autosaves it will start deleting the oldest ones to make room for newer files. so you might actually have the saved file you need - only to have it be overwritten just by leaving Inkscape running and going for a walk!
Your mind is what you think it is.
