Exporting to PDF, why do my images get dark line around them

Postby Snooze » Thu Apr 24, 2014 3:14 pm

Im very new to inkscape & a complete beginner! Just after some help pretty please?

I have created a poster using several png images which I embedded into the document.
When I save the document as a png file it looks great.
But when I save it as a PDF some of the images get this dark line/shadow around them. I don't know how to fix this and ive been researching on the internet and cant find a solution!

Ive attached a picture showing what Im talking about.

I hoping someone out there might be able to help me with this? Im sure its an easy fix but I just don't know how I should do it.

Thankyou :D

Hi.

It's hard to tell anything from a still image.
Pdf is more of a print-ready format, but it may vary asmall bit with different rendering by different implementations.
Like, apart adobe's reader, you could try to open the pdf with foxit reader.
Or open it with inkscape, to see what's going on.
Pdf-s use many kind of clipping in general, maybe the embedded raster part was a png with transparency -with a bit blurred edge on the alpha channel- and it got clipped badly.

You mentioned you used raster images. Why?
That example image could be covered with vectors relative easily.

Thanks for the advice!
I used raster images for this project because I used clip art which was provided in either png or jpg type. I didn't create the images myself as I'm only a beginner trying to learn a few things. I elected to use the png for transparency of background.
Am I able to/should I convert them to eps in inkscape?
Alpha channel, not sure I fully understand that yet.
I'll try using a different pdf reader as well.

I'm happy to upload the svg if you want to take a look? Just need to explain how I do that! Open to suggestions/criticism that will help me learn!
Thankyou, Sue

When composing a reply, there is an "Upload attachment" tab below the composition area where you can select the file to upload and share.
Have a nice day.

I'm using Inkscape 0.92.2 (5c3e80d, 2017-08-06), 64 bit win8.1

The Inkscape manual has lots of helpful info! http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL/html/

Cliparts are meant to be vectors -if they are provided only as raster images, maybe they are stock and needs some licensing?
If so, I'm hoping it's not for a commercial project.

For free vector cliparts have a look at https://openclipart.org/.
From there you can download svg-s.

On the raster formats: jpeg is lossy.
You could use png with no transparency as well, if you involve some masking/clipping in inkscape.

Convert to eps? Is this straight for printing?
No, doing it is unnecessary.

With those raster images embedded, probably the svg is too large to be attached here.
Use dropbox for example and share the link to the file.

Anyway.
By tracing the raster images manually, you would have a much better file and a basic knowledge of inkscape and vector graphics. It's not that complicated, just needs some time.
