Chelia, a character for my Eruta game.

Postby beoran » Sun Jan 13, 2013 6:08 am

Hi! Here's my first attempt at sketching a character for the game I'm developing, Eruta.
I know it's not too great, and the hands and pose need work, but I'd like to get some
suggestions for improvements if you like. :)

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Nice work!
I do see some unusual proportions. Although some might be intentional, it's hard to say for sure. For example, either the calves are too fat or the thighs are too skinny. The hips seem too narrow to me. And similar with the arms, the upper arms either need to be slightly wider, or more effectively the lower arms need to be thinner (or tapered towards the wrist). There's an odd bending of the lower arms too, as if they were extra elbows.

However, I could see how those things might be part of a certain style, either that you're developing for the game story, or maybe your own drawing style. Other than those items, the only thing that really stands out is there's too much symmetry, especially the face.

As far as a pose, I could see her standing with more weight on one leg (hip would be higher), then the other hip would be lower, and the leg would be slightly bent. I don't know if it would be in her character to wink, but that would be a cute pose :D

Yes, I agree the body proportions need work, I didn't use a good model for those. Some asymmetry if definitely a good suggestion.

Anyway, I made another version but I focused on the face first. I changed the eyes and made her node smaller. Next would be a redraw of the body.

Hey there!

At first I want to point out that the face of the second version is waaaay better, I really like it.

Here are some things I think you could improve. (I made a little sketch for a better understanding)
Image

FACE
- I think the eyebrows are slightly too big, especially in width
- Just a small information: Blond hair and brown eyes is pretty unique. I found a statistic, that says that only 3 to 8 percent of women with blonde hair have brown eyes. Link: http://www.haar-und-psychologie.de/haarfarben/haarfarben_augenfarben_statistik_deutschland.html

I think the above posts have hit the nail on the head.
She's a bit masculine (shoulders too big, big eyebrows, etc).
I wanted to comment that even though I do agree with the blonde hair/brown eye comment, that these days there are many bleach blondes (at least in the US), so the eye color isn't real important, though, if you keep the brown eyes, the eyebrows would be darker (brown) - in other words, women generally don't bleach their eyebrows when they bleach their hair, so a brunette usually ends up with brown eyes, blonde hair and natural brown eyebrows. Depending on what your character is going for (i.e. a super heroine vs a sexy gal), you might add eye lashes to make her sexier. As for her wide (masculine) shoulders, they might be a little wider if a super heroine, not so much if trying to be sexy, etc. Nice job for starting out!

Thanks Johannski, I'll try to make a new version with all your suggestions in mind. And thank you flamingolady for your hints as well.

But Celia does have natural fair hair and brown eyes, since she is rather unique as her story will tell. I'd like her to look feminine, with a slight hint of sexy, but without too much idealization. She is supposed to look strong, since she is a huntress, who fights the terrible Beasts that will plague our earth in the 600th century. I didn't add all her gear yet such as her high-tech sword since I wanted to get the basics right.

I want to pierce a few cliche's in my game such that of the chain mail bikini wearing skinny waif that somehow manages to brandish a huge sword. Celia has had a lot of exercise and her body shows it, and as common sense indicates, when you fight Beasts, you may want to cover up your vulnerable spots.

Oh yes, let's hear it for the strong woman!! My earlier suggestion for a wink would be all wrong for the strong woman (....at least until she's won the day). Definitely larger hips and thighs would help there, while keeping waistline as it is. I'll be interested to see the game after it's finished. Will it be for computer or phone? (Or even old school board game?)

"chain mail bikini"

I'm still obsessing on details for the next version of this drawing, but it's not ready yet. I get like this, I sometimes worry too much about the details.

To answer your questions, it will be an open source computer game for Linux, Windows and Mac, and maybe ported to tablets. I think the rules forbid me from posing links to it, but you can search for "Eruta game" on google in stead if you'd like more information.

I hope to post my next edit soon... ish... :p

If you've made the game graphics with Inkscape, you certainly are welcome to post links! If it's not about Inkscape or made with Inskcape, then it's considered spam. But I don't see any problem here :D

Well, AFAICS, the game will make use of game graphics made in in Inkscape for the character portraits, the sprites will probably be pixel art. So if you don't mind I'll give a link to it:

http://beoran.net/eruta

But it's a project that 's going very slowly because it's a hobby project, and for the time being it's just me and two music composers. I'm a programmer by profession so no problem there, ad I have plenty ideas for the plot, but I'm not that skillful with graphics, it goes slowly. I could use a graphic artist or two to help out... Well, just check out the ideas on the web page and let me know what you think of them.

And I posted the latest version of Chelia's portrait in the first image of the thread. I think it's a moderate improvement, although it took me about 10 to 14 hours to get that far, also because I used a grid this time. I hope not to spend that much time on other portraits...

Wow, all kinds of nice improvements!
Now just a couple of things seem "off". To me, the hair seems just a little too thin....or actually, I think it's the whole head that's a little too small. I'm guessing you want it small-ish, in order to emphasize the large body size. But I still think it's just a tiny bit too small. I think just 5% larger would do the trick.

The other thing that stands out to me, now that you have the body armor and weapons, is the boots look a little too....soft, I guess. Somehow it seems like they should be more substantial. Like maybe some buckles, or thick soles, or just a little more tough looking (maybe some kind of armor on them?).

I haven't looked at the website yet, but I'm headed there now. My one secret pleasure is playing little flash games (or flash-like). I usually tend to enjoy puzzle type games, rather than battle/warrior type. But you never know -- if it has really cool sounds, and great mouse/key control, I can get lured into combative games.

Anyway, nice work on Chelia; and I'm looking forward to seeing the other characters :D

Nice! You got what I meant with more curves :D
I agree with all sugesstiones of Brynn, and I'm also very pleased to see, that your character got the typr of person I imagined from your description. She looks strong, selfconfident and has beliveable proportiones.

I also see, that you're trying some different colors on the armor. I would suggest to also try different colors for her shirt, doens't really fit, neither with blue nor with brown armor :)

One other thing I want to point out: The shadows seem a bit strange... just make them black and then transparent (Like alpha 50 or so). Than you also have no strange effects when you change colors :)

You've made some big imporvements here! Hope you manage to get all graphics of the game to the same design and quality.

Thanks for the comments, everyone.

I'm a bit color blind, so color is always a bit problematic to me. Faint colors end up looking gray to me, and I tend to dislike gray, but the colors come out a hit harsh, I guess. Anyway, I tried to improve the colors and I hope it's a bit better now. I tried to enlarge the head, but it ended up looking silly, so I just made the hair a slight bit higher and rounder at the top. As for the boots, they do look a bit plain, and I tried several things but I found nothing that really looked well, so I left it at that for now.

As for the game, it will be an RPG, with a huge plot and with mostly strategic battles. But don't expect to play it any time soon, since I still have 1000 other things to do. I estimate it will take at least 5 years if not more. The website is mostly to get the word out in the hope someone will be willing to help out a bit.

I checked your site from the link you posted here, your project looks promising, and your character drawing has come a long way since your first post in this topic.
Good work

Thanks, Inkspots. I don't think I'm very talented graphically, but now I see that with some effort and the right tools(Inkscape!) I can make some drawings that are passable.

This topic is a few years old, so the links may be no good. But can't hurt to try (color picker for people with colorblindness). viewtopic.php?f=30&t=9538&view=unread#unread

Brynn, thanks for the consideration! Unfortunately those are filters for the "normal" color sighted that simulate an altered color sight. I'd need the opposite. But I'm a programmer so maybe I can work something out with the help of someone with normal color sight.

I love most with character on the second version. The uniqueness is there especially that she looks like a girl warrior because of the sword she is wearing.
