[SOLVED] Tool like Gimps grow selection

Postby UbunTom » Tue Jun 14, 2011 1:47 am

I need to enlarge a path in Inkscape such like the Select>Grow tool on Gimp. I tried the tweak tool but that does not grow all selected paths uniformly and the shape of the path affects how much it grows (width and height)

Please help

Welcome to InkscapeForum!

Yes Inkscape has some relatively similar tools. But instead of the selection, it grows or shrinks the actual path. These are called Path Inset, Outset, Linked Offset and Dynamic Offset. Here's that section of the Guide: http://tavmjong.free.fr/INKSCAPE/MANUAL ... hs-Offsets.

Briefly, Inset and Outset move the entire selected path by a fixed amount for each click or keystroke. Dynamic Offset allows you to control the amount of the offset. And Linked Offset is similar to a clone -- after you create the offset paths (also dynamically), you can edit the original, and all the offsets behave likewise.

Will that work for you?

Thanks for the reply. The problem I have is that Inkscape seems to "Outset" by a percentage of the width/height. Say you have a tall thin rectangle and outset it. The width will grow by a lot less that the height. On GIMP, when growing the selection, each edge would move exactly X pixels out, which is what I reqire.

No, when I apply Outset to a duplicate of tall, thin rectangle (so I can see both the original and the outset) it appears to outset by an equal amount on all sides.

It seems like I was doing something wrong, outset is the right tool. Thanks for your help!
