Separate parts of a single image to different layers.

Postby sinsation » Sun Aug 12, 2007 12:46 pm

Pretty much the topic sums it up. I imported the Devart Fella *.png into Inkscape and did a bitmap trace; however, there are 3 images on one file. Is there a way of selecting one and cutting/pasting it to a different layer? So far things I've tried selects all 3 at once. I also want to know this because it'd be nice to move his hands/feet around.

what you need to do is open the layers dialog and make all of your layers. keep the layers dialog open. now select/highlight an item and hit the shift+pgup or shift+pgdown to move the item to the correct layer. once you get it there, hide the layer so that you can select the next item to move to the next layer.

I think the other part of the problem they have is that the trace has left stuff all as part of one path, so the 3 little dudes all get selected at once.

The way I'd go about breaking it up is to duplicate each, and use the node tool to delete all but one of the men, repeat till you have the objects to define him.
Then move him to one side, and do the same for the second, then again for the third.

Other way is to do break apart on each path in turn, you'll need to select the paths for each guy and merge back together tho or bits that are holes will disappear.

Simarilius, that was exactly it. I select one "fella" and all 3 are selected at once ( one giant movable box around all of them ). I'll try the method you mentioned when I get a chance, thanks.

If you did a trace bitmap you would have lost the gradient effect. Did you try importing the EPS version? It may save you some effort.

If that doesn't work and you're after an exact SVG version of the logo, I have a copy of Illustrator and could convert the EPS to SVG for you.

When I tried to import the .eps file inkscape it couldn't load it. Is there some sort of plugin that I need?

It won't open up in Scribbus either.

It seems you're right. Inkscape has some support for pretty much every other format except EPS :)

Unfortunately, the EPS version is pretty anyway. All the gradients are bitmaps and when I save the file as SVG I end up with 323 PNG and JPG files and an SVG that assembles them together :?

Anyway, hope isn't lost. Provided they have the original file (most likely AI) they should be able to save it as a SVG in perfect quality if you ask.

If you can't get a reply, it wouldn't be a difficult project to recreate it based on the PNGs. But you're first goal should be to get just the outline. I would do this by opening the PNG in a photo editor then turn up the brightness and contrast which will filter out the gradients. Save then load into Inkscape and do a trace bitmap. I would then manually replicate the gradients used in the original.

I skipped the brightness/contrast step altogether and just opened the .png file in inkscape and did a trace bitmap from that. It came out great without the extra step.

(Because this appears as the top Google hit, I am bumping this 5-year-old post. If this is still bad, please smite me.)

An Inkscape extension exists for separating the traced paths to different layers:
http://wiki.evilmadscience.com/Post_process_trace_bitmap

The extension is part of Eggbot Extensions for Inkscape. The installation instructions and download links are on this page:
http://wiki.evilmadscience.com/Installing_software

I haven't tried it myself, but I hope someone finds this useful.
