Quick question: is there a way to taper an open path?

Quick question: is there a way to taper a stoke without clipping, masking, etc.?

I suggest you take a look at Live Path Effects. Also Pen and Pencil tools have modes where you can automatically create tapered paths using LPEs, try them out
