On my screen shot...

I was trying to fill individual hexes (which I had made by cloning) with a paint color.  I was not happy with the way the paint didn't fill all the white in the hex unless I was at a high magnification (too high for me to do what I wanted, as the hexes I wanted to paint are 19 hexes away from each other).  I was reading about "closing gaps" and trying to learn.

I saw the paint color selector in the bottom left hand corner of the screen.  I clicked around in there.  I saw "O" could move up to 2, but then I moved it back down to zero, because I didn't know what it did.  I also noticed that there was a seemingly identical paint color selector in the top right hand part of the screen.  At this point, I was trying to remove some paint I had put in a hex, and I was selecting the X for "no paint" but that wasn't taking out the paint I had put in there.  I hit control-x, but I had to hit it a BUNCH of times.  Then I noticed that no matter what color I selected, the paint tool wasn't working.  But it was registering the action, because I could control-x and it would undo the unseen action I had done when I clicked on a hex.  I noticed the paint colors in the two boxes (top right and bottom left) were now different colors.  I couldn't fix it.

I saved my work. closed the program.  Reopened it.  Still the same problem.  I don't know what I did or where to hit "reset" to take it back to the default conditions.

Thank you for your time and patience.

Well until someone else more knowledgeable about clones comes on, let me take a stab at what 'might' be the color issue.  The 'O' you are talking about means opacity (if we're talking about the same thing here) - and when you have it that low you simply won't see the color.  Try clicking in the box and typing 100 - which means full color.  Or, you can go to the fill n stroke box, and look at the slider bar (I prefer this method), ensure it says 100.  if not slide it up to 100.  Then let's see what happens about your color.

Thank you Flamingo Lady.  That did help.  I'm going through the tutorials and making sure I have the basics down.

DONE.

Can't tell you how many times I've done that, lol.  You're coming along great!  I'm still learning too!

I would suggest NOT using the Paint Bucket tool for filling the hexes with color.  The whole reason for making whole hexagons, instead of using the Y shape that I suggested in your other topics, is because they can be filled with color by simply selecting, and clicking a color on the palette.  Or use Object menu > Fill and Stroke.

The Paint Bucket tool creates a whole new path to hold the color, which doubles your file size.  And you'll need to avoid that, to get the final size that you want.  Plus, it has the gap issue that you found.

This tutorial tells you all the different ways you could accidentally end up with invisible objects:  https://forum.inkscapecommunity.com/index.php?action=articles;sa=view;article=18

I bookmarked and highlighted that link "Why Inkscape gives you nothing".  Thanks so much.

I won't clone anymore.  I'm going to go learn how to take one hex and clone the whole grid with it.  Then I will find a quick way to select a hex and have it fill with a color the way you said.

I did upgrade to 1.0 Alpha, so that I can rotate the canvas and have the hex grid with a flat side down instead of a point side down (oddly, that's very important to the maps I am making.  North is perpendicular to the flat bottom side of the hex.)
