Dear Inkscape experts and users,

A friend sent has me a few svg drawings exported from Archicad (a CAD tool for architects) to laser cut .
I can open the drawings and print them but I cannot select the objects in the drawing with the select tool and convert them to a path for the Gcodetool plugin.
However I can select single elements between each node with the node tool.

I don't know what is wrong with the drawing. Can I fix it other than retrace it on a new layer ?

Georg

Welcome to the forum!

First, everything in the image is grouped, with several nested groups.  Select the single group, and then click Object menu > Ungroup (or this button on the command bar :ung: a few times.  Keep watching the status bar (bottom of window, in the middle) while you do it.  When the status bar says "No groups to ungroup" then you're finished.

Now you have the task of joining all the path segments into single paths.  Well actually, the status bar identifies them as Lines....  Yeah, no, they don't have nodes, so probably you'll need to Ctrl A (select all) and then Path menu > Object to path, to make them paths.  And then finally join the nodes.

Actually, you might not have to join the nodes.  The machine might cut the path segments sequentially, and you can get by without joining nodes.  Do you need instructions for joining the nodes?

Edit
Re-reading your message.  I think you'll probably need to both convert to paths and join the nodes, for the best results with gcode.

Dear Brynn,
Thank you for your quick answer.
The ungrouping helped.
Gcodetools wants the drawing to be in a layer which was not defined in the imported svg.
I created a layer, copied everything into it, ungrouped everything, converted  all objects to a path.
Now I can run Gcodetools (Orientation points, Tool selection, Path to Gcode..) and get the gcode.
I'll try the laser cutter tomorrow and post how it works.

Sorry about posting the same question here. I had (still have ) some technical issues with logging into the German forum and I did not know the posting there had been successful.

Okay, thanks for explaining :) (and glad you found a way to make it work)
