Rotating an object and the bounding box issue

Hello Inkers!

I am new to Inkscape and this is my first post in the community

I'm attempting to finish a project but I'm slowed down by this issue: whenever I rotate an object (say a square), the bounding box of that object stays the same.

What I am trying to achieve is to rotate that square and then scale it along a local axis. The bounding box which stays oriented the same way as before rotating the object is making this simple task a pain.
Take the attachment below for example

I don't recall the rotate and scale working this way
I'm pondering whether there's an issue with me or one with my Inkscape

So far I have tried deleting the preferences.xml file and reinstalling Inkscape, but to no avail. Any ideas?

That's how rotate and the bounding box has always worked, and is the correct behavior.

What do you mean by "local axis"?  Do you mean that you  just want to rotate along one dimension of the rectangle?  There are probably a few ways to do that.  One way would be to scale it before you rotate it.  But here's one way to do it after rotating.  Well, someone else will probably post faster than me, but if my way is different, than you'll have 2 ways to do it

Just switch to the rectangle tool or the node tool to edit your rectangle along its original dimensions.

You both came up with a very good solution! The thing was really bugging me for a couple of days but now I'll be able to finish my work. You even managed to get what I meant by "local axis" xD Guess I've been spending too much time in Blender 3D haha.
