Hello world!
I'm Sven, aka Dillerkind aka ey_sventura. This is my first time posting on this board and I thought I'd just make myself comfortable in my new "home" thread for the years to come. Some of you may remember me (or rather my drawings) from the other Inkscape forum (http://www.inkscapeforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=9424), where I've been posting things for five years now. I won't re-upload everything here, just the last few pics I finished. And in the future, of course, new material will be posted here as well.
If you haven't seen any of my works yet, feel free to check out my blog (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/). It's the most complete of my galleries on the internet, containing everything from traditionally drawn stuff to vectors and pixels. That's right, I don't just work with Inkscape exclusively, thought it's become my main medium over the past few years.
Alright, then here are my latest pieces:
(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2016/04/kp_leggy_vector_2.png?w=800) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2016/04/23/kp-leggy/)

That's all for today. Until next time.

Welcome Sven!
Your work will help make the site prettier :)
-
Thank you brynn! Yeah, I hope it will.
-
Welcome Sven!
-
Welcome Jabier!
-
Ah cool, you've found your way here too. A hearty welcome Jabier from me too!
----------
Btw brynn, how is nudity/nsfw content handled here? I'm currently working on something that contains nudity. Should I post limited/censored versions of such works or not post them at all? In the other forum I used to post limited previews, iirc.
-
This should be considered a family site, by American standards.
I don't want nudity, but your teasers would be ok. If you post a link to an image with nudity, please mark it that there's depiction of nudity. That way, people are happy whether they follow the link or not.
-
Alright, I'll keep that in mind. Thank you.
-
Hello. Here's something new. After a short detour through skeleton and military hardware territory, I'm back to drawing girls :D Additional stuff can be seen in the blog-post. The post itself is safe to view, just ignore the last link at the bottom if you're not into nudity.

-
Here's my latest piece. Partial blurring and color correction were done externally, the rest is the usual mix of pen tool and gradients. This is a slightly cropped version, full variants are in my blog and contain nudity. So, once again, be careful with the text-links at the bottom of the blog post if you're not into nudity.

Sad.. or just tired. I don't know ;)

Here's a new piece. Again, playing with heavy motion blur.

Thanks brynn. I hope it will be ^^

Hello. Just noticed that I had forgotten to update this thread on my last vector piece. Here it is:

I don't know why I'm saying this.....but I like the chunky leg style.
How did your workshop go?
-
Nothing wrong with chunky legs. They're supposed to look cute and many people like cute things, I guess.
The workshop.. well, it's not as I expected it would be. I'm working with a bunch of 5th and 6th graders and it's amazing how kids these days are (yes, I know saying such things makes me sound incredibly old). The way they talk to and treat each other, pretty nasty at times. They can't concentrate for five minutes, can't talk at normal volume, run around in the room, switch off each others computers and screens and do all sorts of annoying, unproductive nonsense. But in the best moments it's a lot of fun nonetheless ;)
-
Finished the other day...

The last challenge in the Inkscape group on Facebook was My Pet. I missed the deadline and I've never had a pet in my life... but I made a little something for the challenge anyway :D

It's cute - but it seems to plan something mischievous ;-) I wouldn't be surprised if all of a sudden, all carrots in your fridge were gone...
-
I didn't know they were having challenges on FB. You know what we should do, if we ever get the new forum going, is have community wide challenges, so that they are cross posted in all project outlets!
-

I have no idea what it actually eats since I've never seen it eating. Can't be very much though. I've never noticed anything missing :D
I didn't know they were having challenges on FB. You know what we should do, if we ever get the new forum going, is have community wide challenges, so that they are cross posted in all project outlets!
Yes, there are challenges on a more or less regular basis. The next one, #70, is Castle. I like your idea. Posting the challenge itself across all channels shouldn't be that much of a problem. People's submissions however, I'm not sure that will be equally easy... that is, if it is desired at all.
-
Well true, it poses the problem about where to post people's drawings. I suppose we could use the website gallery for that. But just to have the challenge posted across the community. Or if people want to post their results, they could just post in whatever site where they read about the challenge. I guess I'm assuming the challenge is simply an opportunity for practice, and that no winner is actually chosen. Certainly I hope we can have contests which are posted across the community. And then the winner would be in the gallery on the website.
Is there a lot of participation in the challenges on FB?
-
Well, that depends on the theme. Sometimes there's no more than a handful of submissions, sometimes there are a few dozens maybe. I can't say exactly since my online time is quite limited and I don't check thoroughly every day. And yes, these challenges are just for fun and practice.

Here's a new little piece I just finished...

Smart idea with the pattern :)
(Looks like you didn't bend it, but instead decided to make three separate objects - and it works great!)
(up in the North, we only have drizzle and ~0°C, no snow)
-
Oh, I like that one. Another new favorite!
-
Moini
Thank you, that's right. The pattern is broken down into separate parts. It's one of the standard patterns and there's no way to "bend" these (well, none that I know of anyway). Sometimes I don't mind using a single shape but here it bugged me and so I split it up.
brynn
Thank you, brynn! I'm glad you like it.

First commission in quite a while... Supergirl. This is the cropped version. Full image shows nudity.

The eyes are really nice! It's so nice to see something besides anime eyes (which have been so trendy for way too long). Well, I guess they are anime-ish, but I like that the outer shape is not so round Surprising not to have earrings!
Edit
Have you started to use the new Gradient Mesh yet?
-
I like anime and I suppose this has influenced my drawing style... but so have western animation and comics too. I try to avoid simply copying popular styles though. I feel that borrowing elements is fine but mimicking another person's entire way of drawing is just boring. But anyway, I'm happy you like the eyes.
As for gradient meshes, no, I haven't begun using them. I've done a few very brief tests but come to the conclusion that brief tests simply aren't enough and I'll have to dedicate more time and practice to get going with these. I've been using regular gradients for years now and for the most part I don't really have to think much about what I'm doing - I just do it. With mesh gradients - well, let's just say at this point in time they still feel kinda awkward to me. Though I'm blaming myself, rather than the mesh gradient :D
-
At first, I thought gradient mesh would be so awesome. But I never really thought about how it would work. I think I thought we would be able to bend the gradient's "arms".
But in reality, it can become quite tedious. The mesh nodes come out either in concentric circles or a rectangular grid. So often there's a lot of moving them around and tweaking colors. In my first experiment, even when I took the colors directly from the photo, they didn't look right. I haven't figured out why yet. Maybe just because even with gradient mesh, you can't make an exact copy of a photo using vector editor.
But with practice, I think I'll learn more, and find different techniques, and it will get better.
-
Being able to "bend" the gradient along a path or something would indeed be helpful. And I totally agree with you: adjusting the mesh can be a bit tedious... and confusing as well. Also, if you aren't careful, the points and lines of the mesh will show in the colored shape.. well, not the actual mesh lines when you select the shape, but the colors you insert into the single points and that follow the grid lines. Gah, it's difficult to describe. But I don't want to sound like I'm complaining. Like I said, I'll have to invest some time to get the hang of it.
Picking colors from photos, in my experience, rarely does the trick. Just look at many beginners' self portraits that are grabbed directly from a photograph. The colors usually look awful and so does the line-work and other details that were simply grabbed from the reference. There are so many subtle nuances to an object's color, from light sources, shadows, etc. You only pick one single color value per mesh point and there's quite a bit of space between these points, unless you're making a really high-res mesh... which then, of course, results in tons of color points to deal with. I think it's better to pick a few colors and then adjust them to fit your image in general. Don't try to recreate the photo in down to the tiniest detail.

(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2017/03/machete3_vector.png?w=800) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2017/03/27/machete-3/)
-
Yay for floating hair...
Yeah, yay!
Sigh, I wish I could be a real artist. That floating hair is really inspiring! While this girl's hair seems quite thin (or maybe it's just cut short in a lot of places) I'm imagining an image which is a face, and very, very thick, floating, curling, red/auburn hair, which fills almost the whole image, except for the face, almost like the face floating in an ocean of hair.
Also your skill for creating different kinds of characters and facial expressions is super inspiring! So many artists, it seems like they get stuck, and always the portraits they draw look like either the same person every time, or the subjects are all from the same family, and look a lot alike (like a lot of alliteration). But your range is amazing!
Great work, as always :)
-
Thank you! Her hair is... well.. *cough* styled individually. It's short on top, except for that bit that covers the forehead, the sides are partly shaved and then there are the thin, twirly braids. A professional hairstylist might get nightmares from this.. I don't know :D
The other point you mentioned... Some people stick to a certain format, e.g. portraits or busts. Many create OCs (original characters) and then go on drawing these in all sorts of situations. For some reason I can't do that. I've tried time and time again to come up with a character design that I like and want to keep drawing, like in a comic or something. But so far I've had little success. Therefore I have to come up with different characters every time. However, even though I rarely draw the exact same character more than once, there are certain subjects that pop up quite regularly. I think there's a lot of room for improvement in the variety department. On the other hand, as long as I'm not getting bored I guess all is well ^^;
Btw what makes a person "a real artist"?
----------
Speaking of variety... here's something new. Angry Beards - viking raid from above. Take cover! :D
(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/angrybeards_vector.png) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2017/04/02/angry-beards/)
-
He's mighty angry! (and I think he's also had some mead before onboarding his flying dragon boat ;-))
What's that thing on his left wrist, Dillerkind?
-
Mighty angry, yeah you might say so. Gotta have your berserker mode on when doing this sort of freefall raid ;) As for the mead, I'm afraid that's true too. Normally I'd say he's old and reasonable enough to not drink and driv.... erm fly. But then again I guess the old vikings weren't known as the most reasonable people in history.
That thing on his wrist is just some piece of metal. I like to add such plates randomly, on hats/helmets, body armor, with or without stuff engraved (Naruto headband style :D)
-
LOL :-) You should visit Haithabu sometime, if you ever come to Schleswig-Holstein ;-) (wth is Naruto...?)
-
First time looking at this thread.
Wow! Really nice stuff!
I am going to look at the blog, too.
-
Moini
Do you live in S-H? Thanks for the tip; I don't know if I'll get there anytime soon (I rarely get out of my village :D) but I shall keep this in mind.
Naruto is a popular anime series about ninjas.
k-drive
Thank you! Hope you'll enjoy future works as well.

And here's the latest piece. Back to my classic girl-with-sword subject.
(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2017/04/bladegirl2_vector.png) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2017/04/14/blade-girl/)
-
Wow. this one is so detailed! The stripes on the cuff, the 'pattern' on the vest, the tiny spiky bits of leather on the handle of the sword, the scratches on the leather, the folds, the depth of field. Amazing! (and it looks as if she'd be very fast with her sword... ;-) ).
Yes, I live in S-H, near Kiel (but haven't visited Haithabu / Hedeby for quite some time - I think they've built a small village for reenactment outside since I've last been there. Oh, they've got an Easter market...! If it doesn't rain, then perhaps... But, oh, their exhibition is closed until next year :-/)
-
Is that the first girl with tattoo? Or is that henna (which I know is usually on the hands or arms, but the reddish brown color makes me wonder)?
Oh, I almost missed the scar on eyebrow! Tough customer ;)
-
Moini
Thank you. I wanted to try a padded look on the vest to add some detail and break up the large uni-colored shape. Normally I would just use Inkscape's onboard patterns but here I wanted to do something manual (though I did use the wavy pattern on the blue cloth). Far from perfect but for a first attempt I'm happy enough with the result. Only problem is that it can be very time-consuming to add details manually (without using bitmap elements/textures) and with a mouse :D
brynn
I like to add little scars, scratches and other such things. They can help make things look less clean and sterile, which I feel is both a strength and a problem of vector graphics. Tattoos, no it's not the first one. I've drawn tattooed characters before and I often stick to this formula: simple shapes and lines, non-symmetrical design, red or pink color. In real life tattoos I think a combination of red and black looks great but in my drawings I usually go with red only. The ones I draw aren't complex and detailed enough to add a second color ^^
Here's one example. There are more in my blog but most of them are older pencil drawings (in the 2009/10 gallery) and some contain nudity. Surprisingly I haven't done that many vector pieces with tattoos.

I think I'd have liked to have a teacher who would do something like this with the kids :)
-
Winged train conductor, or engineer? The hat reminds me of a train engineer's cap, but the watch would be more reminiscent of the conductor. Maybe the switchman would have both?
-
Moini
I think the kids would like to have the image, too. But they'd rather just copy it from me than make it themselves. I've had more than one moment when a conversation with them reminded me of the famous instant-masterpiece-button. You press it and there's the super duper artwork, no sweat, no effort, no nothing :D
An update to my small rant in the blog post: there are a few kids left who actually didn't quit and still want to go on with the workshop. They just didn't bother to let me know that they couldn't take part in the last few sessions which led me to the conclusion that they had given up. The same ol' evil: a lack of communication between people ;)
brynn
I never thought of anything like that. Years ago a friend gave me a book with works by some graffiti artist (http://www.wonabc.com/). The guy does lots of characters, rather than letters/styles, which of course appealed to me. Many of his characters wore caps/hats like this. This has influenced me and hasn't gone away since. The entire hip hop culture (music, graffiti, etc) has had quite an impact on my style as well as the subjects of my drawings.
-
Hey, that's cool :) (well, lack of communication is not so cool, but going on with a fun activity that might give them some skills to express themselves is :) )
-
Yeah, hip-hop culture is outside my realm of experience. Obviously, I can't recognize when it's right in front of me.
Kids are often more interested in social interaction than learning. Teaching can be very frustrating that way. But as the old teachers' mantra goes, something like 'if we can reach/teach just one child, our effort has not been wasted - some day that child might be the one candle in the darkness, and one light is all it takes to push back the darkness'.
-
brynn, don't sweat it. He doesn't look very hip-hop-ish in general, what with the sleeveless vest, wristwatch, the beard and everything. I was just explaining where I'm coming from.
I like that mantra. I have strong doubts if one of my kids is going to be that one light (in terms of creating artworks, digital or otherwise) or that I'll be able to make them shine but it's a nice thought nonetheless. We'll see :)
-
Don't let them read this :) (or are you doubting your own abilities? - Already offering something like you do in a school goes way beyond what most would do, so: Hooray :-D )
-
I have strong doubts if one of my kids is going to be that one light (in terms of creating artworks, digital or otherwise) or that I'll be able to make them shine but it's a nice thought nonetheless. We'll see
Oh, you never know! You really don't. Kids aren't going to stop and tell you that you made a difference. It may be many years, before they realize what an impact one of their teachers had. Maybe you haven't had such a realization yourself yet? But honestly, as I look back, just the smallest of gestures sometimes can make an impact. Maybe it isn't even about the subject being taught? But teachers, well schoolteachers anyway, are in a position to make a hundred impacts (if they make a career out of teaching), although they may never know what about or which kids. It's that blind faith that makes great teachers!
-
You're both right, of course. You never know what the future might hold in store. Neither optimism nor faith in my own capabilities or "impact on the world in general" are among my strengths. Therefore I really appreciate your encouraging words. But enough of this. Let's move on to new vector material.

:fyi: Today is Fathers Day in the US, too.

Cool :D What did he say?
He seemed to like it. It was just a little addition I made for the actual gift though. I didn't want to make a plain card and thus thought of a fun little pic :)

And here's another old sketch that was originally meant for a pencil drawing but eventually turned into a vector piece.

It was storming like that here, too, until yesterday... My banana plant lost one of its first leaves :-(
What is your wolf looking out for?
-
Aww, sorry to hear about your plant. I'm not exactly blessed with a "green thumb" but we have some green on our balcony too and I really like it. As for your question, I don't know. I suppose he isn't looking for anything in particular, just daydreaming ;)

Here are my latest two pics.
Sort of a follow-up to this piece (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2016/07/17/dropzone/) from last year.

There's another leaf now ;-) (and it's just an experiment anyway - who would expect a banana to grow in S-H?...).
Is the death/cigarette meaning intended (i.e. would this be a very rare 'message' in your images)? Or is it all in the eyes of the beholder?
-
That last one looks like a good anti-smoking ad!
-
Moini
What, aren't bananas a common export article in northern Germany? ;D
That's a valid question indeed. Skulls are a favorite drawing subject of mine. I've never been a smoker myself but years ago, in my more hip-hop-y days I often drew characters smoking joints, cigars and such. It's unhealthy but there's still something "cool" about it, graphic-wise. Nonetheless I often make funny/silly remarks about smoking in general. For a long time my favorite was "Rauchen macht klein und hässlich". A few years ago though, it was replaced by "Rauchen ist gesund und macht erwachsen", which I got from a friend's friend, who's a smoker. He just dropped this line in a very dry and serious way - it was just too funny. Instant classic :D
To sum it up, I guess you could say it's a mix: a thing I like(d) to draw and my anti-smoking attitude.
brynn
In a way, yes.
Btw. as you can see, I'm now able to log into the forum again. I was also trying to mail and let you know but guess what - now my mails don't get through to you. I'm getting some mailer daemon error O_o
-
I'll look into the mail errors. Thanks for letting me know :)
-
Thanks, Sven, that was very interesting :D (having witnessed many people actually die or suffer badly from the consequences of smoking, I concur that it's a good thing to try and teach kids this with some humour)
Btw. I like the way you drew the hands, with no 'holes' between the bones in the palm area.
-
The email is fixed now, if you still need to message me. Sorry for the problems, but I think our move is complete now.
You could even try the gmx.de address if you want. I'm guessing it won't be blocked on this server.
-
Moini
For some odd reason I like to draw skeleton hands this way. I can't say why... It's just another thing, like the way I draw their eye sockets, with the swirly lines and such :)
brynn
Cool, thanks for the update. I think I won't switch back to the other mail address. Gmail works fine and I'll probably drop the GMX address entirely at some point.
----------
Here's a piece I finished yesterday. Maybe I'll get back to drawing cute furry characters more often. Some variants and stuff can be seen in the linked blog post.

And next...
(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2017/08/mirrorselfie_vector_cropped.png) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2017/08/15/mirror-mirror/)
-
The mirror (visible in the full version) with its scratches and slightly worn mirror-surface is impressive - just like the bokeh and the flash and the blur... (and while I don't exactly like the subject, the composition is cool, too).
-
Thank you! Yeah, I totally understand that the subject isn't for everybody. I wasn't sure about the flash. I was hoping to find a good source describing how exactly this works physically but wasn't entirely successful. I found some examples showing results in Blender or other 3d software. In the end I just used the lens flare filter in PS and then recreated this as I could in Inkscape. So, basically, I ended up with a bunch of circular shapes that could be rearranged and used in other images as well... that is, as soon as I find an explanation how exactly the different shapes are aligned along that "axis". Anyway, I'm happy enough with the result - for now :D
-
Now I'm even more impressed - trying to base this not just upon what things look like in real life, but on science, is something that I don't expect many artists would even consider. Cool!
-
Hahaha... I usually try to be NOT too scientific in what I do. For me it's often style over substance. There are things however, that should have a certain degree of realism in order to not stick out in a negative way. Like for instance having a light source clearly visible in the upper left corner while the character casts a shadow towards the lower left corner. I try to avoid blatant errors like this but on the other hand I don't try to make everything super exact and realistic either. As for lens flares, it can look weird if you're just randomly scattering colored circles all over the image. As for as I've seen they are all aligned on one axis. Just how to position the axis and the different shapes along that axis, that's something I still have to figure out. Though I have to admit that this is more out of curiosity and not something I plan to use a lot. Anyway, I've gone into babbling mode again. Too many words :D
-
Sven, I don't mind any babbling - I find it interesting to read a bit about how people make art and what they think when they do :) (I visit your blog everytime you post something, to find out more). And curiosity is important!
-
Yeah, I totally agree about the curiosity - which is funny because I'm terribly indifferent about a lot of things. Btw Inkscape/vector isn't the only thing I do so it might be worth stopping by every once in a while even when I don't post anything here... but then again, I guess you've noticed that already.
-
I haven't been very productive lately. Here's just a little something I felt like doing. Small, simple, not very involved...

This is more or less a remake of a little traditional drawing I made a few years back. Why remake it? I don't know... It's nothing special, I just stumbled upon the old piece and thought I'd redraw it in Inkscape.

Not an uncommon situation... The shading is really great here!
-
Not an uncommon situation...
Sadly; if I understand your meaning.... Maybe you're thinking the devil character is a daydream for the young female? I don't see that so much. I see him being real and sneaking up on her, which is why it would be sad.
For some reason, I want the devil character to be partially invisible, or partially obscured, in some way. Or maybe if there were a mirror where we see the reflection of the devil, but we don't see him first hand, it would seem more like a daydream?
But what strikes me the most is the facial expression of the female. There's just so much....depth of innocence and purity and youthful bliss in that face! It's truly a masterpiece by itself! And given how well that's achieved, I have to say it makes the rest of the image distasteful for me.
If she was not child-like, maybe more worldly....I can really imagine a comical older female who's past her prime - lots of bulging and sagging, maybe bad tattoos, huge earrings, bad hair color that's growing out, bad hair style, maybe self cut/styled (thinking of some Carol Burnett characters - not sure who is a more current comedienne, who portrays such a character). Anyway, a youthful devil sneaking up on her would be hilarious (especially if it's a daydream!) !!
And the other thing that strikes me (these aren't in order). I don't recall any of your drawings where we see the gnarly, sometimes partly skeletonized, or somewhat militant (guns, weapons), or just punks, either male or female character, in the same image with the sweet young female characters. So in the hands of the devil, I see the contrast of the gnarly, maybe evil character, almost conflicting with the young female. I just find it's an interesting contrast.
-
Mmh. I was rather thinking of normal couple real-life situations. Mischief - yes, bad intentions - no.
-
It's been too long since I drew the sketch so I can't really remember the thought process that led to this drawing. Usually though, there isn't much back story to my pics. I have an idea for a character or a situation, a brief moment in time and try to put it on paper before the thought is gone. I don't know what's happening before or after that moment. Who are they and what's the relationship between them? Does he succeed with his prank? How does she react? Who knows... To me it's just a funny situation... funny, silly, immature, whatever you wanna call it. Is it distasteful? Personally, I wouldn't say so but of course others might disagree. Moini's last line actually sums it up nicely.
As for your other observation... yes, I guess that's true. I don't draw multi character images very often and usually I go for either tough/punky/etc or cute. More often the latter. I don't know.. I just love to draw cute.

Love it :) (not just the gnome, but also the background) I was thinking rather of Christmas than of Halloween... somehow.
Looking foward to your version of Rotkäppchen (little red riding hood) :) There's a place for a wolf, too... Or perhaps something less well known... Schneeweißchen und Rosenrot, with bear? Or an old woman, like Frau Holle? So many great characters :)
-
Christmas? Hmm, interesting... I'd never have made this connection. Red riding hood is the only fairy tale character that I've already covered, if I'm not mistaken. Not sure if you saw these back when I originally posted them.
This one I made for my sister, too:
(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/redridinghood_vector.png) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2012/07/02/red-riding-hood/)
This one was a collab with a friend of mine who used to work in a photo studio:
(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2013/07/redhood_collab_galleryobscure.jpg) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2013/07/23/redhood-collabo/)
I still have another unused sketch from the first image that I definitely want to work on further at some point. As for other fairy tales, we'll see. I agree that there are many cool characters and stories, it's just that I rarely think of these when I sit down to sketch. Therefore I usually end up drawing something entirely different... mainly girls in skimpy clothes :D
-
The first wolf is still a bit static - while the girl already has a hint of that defiant look :) While it's already a good picture, you've become quite a bit better with all that practice! (even the one year between the two wolves makes a big difference). It's cool to see that development in time lapse here :) (no, I don't remember seeing your Rotkäppchen).
Christmas, a time for stories and family. That was the connection :)
(I think I need a friend who works in a photo studio, too... couldn't draw any wolves, though... lol)
-
Sorry for the late reply.
You're right about the first wolf. Quite stiff and overall rather goofy-looking. I wouldn't say though, that a year of practice made the difference because one year isn't that much in my slow world. The second wolf was supposed to look different than the other one: more fierce, aggressive, savage, you name it. The first was meant to be child-compatible, cute and funny.
As for the photographer friend.. haha, sorry, can't help you with that. Guess I'm just lucky in this regard. Although... besides this one collabo, I haven't really drawn any advantage from this friendship.. I mean in an artistic way, not speaking about the personal relationship of course LOL

This was my latest piece. Once again, I'm only posting a cropped version, for the usual reasons.

I like that one! Put on a t-shirt and I would buy one :)
-
Cool! Glad you like it. I guess I could add it to my RedBubble store... just not sure how to do it exactly. I could either remove the background and just have the creatures, which is what I normally do with characters (i.e. only have the character). Or I could leave the image as it is but personally I don't like having a rectangular print on the front or back of a shirt. Looks like a poster slapped onto the cloth. Or I could make it so the image fades away towards the edges... but this might looks crappy too. I don't know, what do you think?
-
Oh, I see what you mean. I didn't think of that. Yeah, I tend not to like the whole rectangle thing either. (And plus, there is a certain transfer process which smells kind of rubbery - even years and many washings later. And a whole rectangle of that, iick.)
I think it would look good just to have the character by itself. But it would need some changes to stand on its own. That sort of bubble-wrap effect which seems to overlay parts, and background in other parts, would not work if the character was by itself.
Maybe there could be something like the bubblewrap background, but instead of a big rectangle, maybe an oval, which blurs around the edges, smaller than the character, so it sort of looks like it's bursting out. I'm thinking of an oval like the yellow here, except it would be in the background. And not yellow, but having something of the current background.
But it would be nothing quick or easy, probably....
-
It would look good silkscreened indeed. I'd make a somewhat fading edges.
-
Sorry for the late reply. I haven't been online much these last days. Thank you for your suggestions. I actually like both of them. Problem is that now I'll have to find a way to make something that's similar yet not so similar that I feel I'm just ripping off your ideas :D

I don't think my suggestion is specific or detailed or unique or creative enough as to really be "an idea". It only comes out of my memory of other tshirt designs. I certainly don't care if you use it!
Although I could understand if your personal sense of integrity means being 100% unique :)

He has to walk around like that, to keep the pants from falling down, haha. Is that a bedroll around the backside area?
I zoomed in, to see if that little mark on the knee was some kind of logo or symbol. And doing that, I saw all the detail of the clothing, which you don't really see without zooming. Particularly, I noticed how you actually made...well it's not just pleats in the pants, where the leg folds are (near the crotch), instead of just bunched up or wrinkled fabric! They look like sort of a combination of pleats and inset plackets. And also the texture -- I guess that's corduroy (sp?).
So suddenly I realize among your many skills, you apparently take more interest in clothing and clothing style and construction, than most people. Have you ever seen pants like that? Maybe a new style in Europe that I haven't seen yet? Or just dreamed up? In reality, I suspect the plackets would make wearing the pants uncomfortable. But it does look kind of cool. Those shoes are super cool too!
:argh: I wish I could fire up the website team, to put more graphics on the site. We really should get all the best Inkscape artists, to be involved with that. But I can't seem to get anyone interested. I suspect it's a case of "if we can't do it in some certain awesome way, we don't even try". And so we wait, until someone does it some certain awesome way.... Well, I saw something about a discussion of website redesign at the next hackfest. So maybe it won't be too much longer :beg:
Anyway, another fantastic image

<offtopic>@brynn: Is there still a website team?</offtopic>
-
Well, I think over time, it's members have less and less to to work on it. (For myself, it's just gotten so technical, there's not much I can help with anymore. Plus, gitlab continues to be a challenge for me, so it's hard to keep up with the various issues. But for everyone else - busy.) Maybe there's some "new blood", but it doesn't seem to have much time either.
-
Nice!

Yes, it is. Sometimes I add backpacks, sometimes bedrolls, and sometimes both. After all, even if you're a raging (skinny) barbarian you'll probably want some comfort at night LOL

The thing on the knee is just a randomly placed hole. I usually put these things on armor and more sturdy materials in general, not so much on fabrics. Here's an example (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2017/05/20/claw/). The texture, I don't know. Maybe it's corduroy.. or maybe it's just my habit of using the basic line pattern a lot.
As for the overall pants design/style, no, I don't think there's a trend going on. If there was, this would be a huge coincidence because I'm pretty much the last person to know of new trends going on (clothes and otherwise). Nowadays I tend to draw rather basic, casual clothing. In the past I did a lot more crazy stuff with clothing and -especially- armor; more layers, more details, more useless stuff like bands and rings and such. I still use such elements, just not as much as I used to. And normally there isn't really a direct inspiration. I just put stuff together in a rather haphazard way. I do have a friend who studied fashion design though - but that's about as close as I get to the whole fashion style thing LOL

I don't really keep up with what's going on on the website (and the internet and world in general LOL). I haven't looked into the gallery section, the Finished works section of the forum however isn't very active. It's mainly me and Lazur dropping in with some crazy (in a good way) filter stuff every now and then. The facebook group is quite active though, with people posting finished works as well as questions and problems. Seems that these days this is the more popular approach than a website/forum. Speaking of which, are you guys in this group as well? I'm just wondering if maybe we've even been talking there without me realizing.. you know, real names vs. forum nicknames.
Anyway, another fantastic image
Thank you very much! *bows*

I haven't been doing much work with Inkscape these days.
I don't even have FB or twitter accounts. I'm one of those who thinks social media has taken the human race backwards in our evolution. We all graduated from the human race's middle school (or "junior high school" in my day) back in the middle ages. But "don't get me started", you know. Probably I'm just old and inflexible!
-
Brynn was talking about inkscape.org, when she meant the website team - not sure if that was clear.
I do have a fb and twitter account, but I'm only using them to advertise for our local Linux event,
https://twitter.com/kielux
https://www.facebook.com/Kieler-Open-Source-und-Linux-Tage-640958355959256/
I think I'd go crazy if I also had to take care of requests for Inkscape on social media....
-
Okay, I see. I'm not very active on FB either; mainly posting updates to my blog whenever I've finished new drawings. And yes, to some extend I agree with you, brynn. Social media (or maybe the internet in general) can look like it has undone the last few hundreds of years in human evolution. The Inkscape group I was talking about is a nice exception though. Maybe it's very strictly moderated and inappropriate posts get deleted before I even see them. But so far it's been a really pleasant experience. People post works, ask questions and receive help - that's how I feel the internet should be used (instead of people dissing one another all the time).
Moini, I'm curious. How often does this event take place? Every year? And how big is it, i.e. can you give an approximate number of visitors and participants?

Good work, Sven! And just the right colors :)
The only thing that I find a bit strange is the reflection of her collar on the ... whatever it might be called... desk? Shouldn't it look differently on the glass and on the desk? And have a kink where the glass lid ends?
Moini, I'm curious. How often does this event take place? Every year? And how big is it, i.e. can you give an approximate number of visitors and participants?
Yes, the main event takes place once a year, in September. Additionally, we organize several smaller events each year, usually workshops or talks and Linux Presentation Days.
As for the number of visitors... We don't count them. Entry is free, and everyone can come and go as they please - and they do, many people work on premises. We had about 30 persons who gave a talk/workshop in 2017, 15 'booths' - ranging from a roll-up display to a 10m maker corner. So 'staff' alone would have been about 50 persons. We celebrated Software Freedom Day with a community breakfast, had a raffle each day (prizes ranging from a set of small giveaways to a course in the Linuxhotel), and most talks have been recorded (but not all of them are available online yet). There were about 66 workshop participations, and we got 85 filled in feedback questionnaires/raffle lots (on two days, people were allowed to fill in one per day).
I really don't know how many came - 150? 200? 250? More? Less? All I can say is that there were certainly more than 100, and probably less than 350.

It's just a clone of the entire character layer, flipped vertically and skewed a bit. I guess the entire perspective would be different (e.g. you wouldn't see cleavage from above in the reflection) but to be honest, I didn't feel like redrawing everything to make it more realistic. This would have taken a lot of time and hardly anybody would have noticed... or at least I haven't had any criticism except for yours. So, it's fine for me but you're still right, of course.

Cool! Glad you like the style. You mean how long I've been using Inkscape or drawing in general? Inkscape I've been using since 2009, I think. And I've been scribbling for ages... pretty much since I was a kid. I began taking the whole drawing thing more seriously in the 90s, when I was a teenager. So, in short: I've been drawing for 20+ years and using Inkscape for almost 10 years now.

My humble contribution to the current cover image competition of the Inkscape group on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/groups/inkscape.org/). It wasn't until two days ago when I finally came up with an idea :D

Oh, I really like that one!

Thanks brynn, glad you like it.

Just a little teaser of the thing I'm working on at the moment.

Finished last night, much later than anticipated. Full image shows a lot of skin, no naughty bits though. I'm still only posting the cropped version for "safety reasons".

nice details and decent color palette! only the background - blur is a bit too much in my opinion.
-
Thank you! Yeah, it's okay for me but you're probably right. I might have overdone it a bit with the blur.

Here's a new one. Variants in current blog post.

Hello. Last week there was another challenge in the FB group. Pretty much made for me, what with the girl-with-sort subject and all that :) Steps overview in the linked blog post.

..nice, would be cool to see a third "angel" with deadly weapons. the first one's tights are pretty tight :) sick design!
-
Hahaha, when I draw tight, then it's usually VERY tight... as in cutting into flesh. Probably not very good for blood circulation :D I'll definitely do more weapon-wielding ladies, but don't know if the next piece will have such subject. Haven't really decided what to do next. Anyway, thanks for the feedback! Glad you like the design :)

Ever wonder what's going on in your garden when you're not around to watch? Well, here's the answer :D

(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2018/09/bladegirl9_vector.png) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2018/09/22/blade-girl-9/)

Hi Sven :) When you draw such a piece, are you thinking of a story to accompany it in your mind?
-
Hi Sven :) When you draw such a piece, are you thinking of a story to accompany it in your mind?
Hello. No, I don't. Unfortunately I'm not very creative when it comes to stories and such. As far as I remember even as a child I always drew random characters but without a story-line to connect them. That's why I haven't drawn even a short comic yet, although I've often thought about and wanted to do this. It's depressing... LOL
-
Nah, it's just how you do it, and that's good :) I was just curious, as the image /could/ be holding a story. I wasn't suggesting how it should be.
-
Yeah well, I really wish I had some story writing skills but unfortunately the only stories I could come up with are very generic things that have already been done to death by other people (zombie apocalypse anybody?). On the other hand, seeing how much time I need for just a single image, I don't even want to know how long a comic, even just a short one, would take me ;D
----------
Here's a simple new piece...

-
This could be the cover of a book. Good that he has a dog, I don't think he'd manage to actually use that huge club.
-
There are dozens of girls with oversized steel blades in this thread - and now you're producing the argument that he couldn't use that wooden club?!? :D
-
Yes! He looks even younger, and a lot less confident than those girls. Definitely, I'd trust the female furries to wield their weapon.
-
I see... Well, I trust he'll be fine. And the last two furry girls aren't the best examples since their blades were relatively unspectacular in terms of size. Let me re-post a few other examples :)
(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2016/07/machete2_vector.png) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2016/07/02/machete2/)

(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2018/02/bladegirl4_vector.png) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2018/02/20/blade-girl-4/)
And last but not least I picked this one. Not done in Inkscape but on paper with colored pencils. This was a series of drawings that had some of the biggest blades I've drawn. Good ol' pencil days *sigh* Now I'm feeling a bit nostalgic...

I just finished this piece. She's making up for the lack of swords with a *cough* funky fashion sense :D
(https://eysventura.files.wordpress.com/2018/10/mask_vector.jpg) (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2018/10/20/the-mask/)
-
Holy crap - those shoes are terrifying!! If she's a kick boxer, she'll do fine without a sword!
-
These are basically (high) platform shoes, only the soles aren't solid "blocks" but carved out in the back. Looking odd.. but terrifying? Hmm...
-
I thought she could use them for jumping... and worried a little about her ankles, those look very fragile, and the posture suggests she doesn't have a lot of muscles to support herself... Weird thinking.
-
....but terrifying? Hmm...
Didn't you intend for her to look scary or menacing? I really thought she must be a kick boxer, since there's no other weapon.
But I suppose you've never tried on a pair of women's shoes with heels, or platforms? If you ever did, you'd know instantly why those look terrifying!
But I'll give you that they are a little funny too :-D
-

I don't think it's weird thinking. In fact, looking at the thin ankles and the overall pose which isn't very realistic or natural, such thoughts aren't that unexpected or unusual.
Didn't you intend for her to look scary or menacing? I really thought she must be a kick boxer, since there's no other weapon.
I understand why you'd think so, especially considering how often I draw characters with weapons. But no, for once I didn't have a fighter in mind. Just some girl with strange clothing and posture.
But I suppose you've never tried on a pair of women's shoes with heels, or platforms? If you ever did, you'd know instantly why those look terrifying!
Indeed I haven't tried on such shoes and to be honest, I don't intend to do this any time soon :D When I see extremely high platforms/heels I don't necessarily feel terrified - I won't deny though, that I often think that these can't exactly be healthy. But this is more a general thing because of the danger of tripping or breaking the wearer's ankles, not the specific design (which I assumed you were referring to).

Here's a new piece. Some mad little fella you probably won't wanna mess with :D

Right :) He looks very agile, and very angry.
-
Yikes! Are his feet missing? Or those are maybe some kind of ninja slippers? Oh, or he's part animal, those are paws?
Those clouds of kind of dust or steam, and plus desert-like setting, put me in mind of the Road Runner!
Yeah, definitely, I'm not standing in his way. You have such a talent for stimulating the imagination, with your characters!
-
Right :) He looks very agile, and very angry.
Angry indeed. Someone on FB said he looks a bit like a goblin... to which I replied that a remark like this was probably the reason why he's so pissed :D
Yikes! Are his feet missing? Or those are maybe some kind of ninja slippers? Oh, or he's part animal, those are paws?

Thanks brynn. His feet are neither missing nor are they paws. They're just very small, compared to the spaciously cut pants and gaiters. Sometimes I draw ridiculously big feet (Gears of War style) and sometimes the complete opposite. I like the silly combination of wide pants and tiny feet, especially with more cartoony characters like this.

After his eye surgery, he never had problems reading in the dark again :D

Hello hello and a late Happy New Year everybody! I haven't updated this thread in a while... Why? Because my last few drawings were all done traditionally, nothing Inkscape-related. Today, finally, there's something new for me to post. No skull, no beard, no sword or other such things, instead some cute girl. Hope you like...

And a happy new year to you, Sven!

Simple new piece...

Your character studies are absolutely fascinating! It's impossible to have a glance and move on. I always have to stop and look at all the details.
I'm particularly attracted to the yellow glow from the light, on his right side.
-
Thanks for your kind words, brynn. And sorry for the late reply. Colored light is a rare thing in my pics. Usually I just use a white-to-transparent gradient (or very bright, almost-white yellow tone) for the lighting. Not very realistic but I guess it works well with my overall style. Though this is definitely something I'll have to explore more in the future.

Here's a new piece, based on a little sketch I scribbled last week. Sketch can be seen in the latest blog-post, not that it's very spectacular.

-
I don't know why, but I think the mouth area makes him have a wise expression. And with that blade, I wouldn't want to come too close :)
The missing feet worry me a bit, though - how can he walk? Has someone cut those off? Doesn't it hurt to walk on those?.. :-/
-
Nothing has been cut off. The feet are just simple stumps, just like the overall body shape is very simple (look at the steps). The whole character was meant to look kinda goofy and I thought that these feet would add to this. (ah well, that and I liked the irony of a rabbit, who in comics is usually drawn with very large feet, with just tiny stumps for feet instead)
-
Mhm. Okay - artistic style, then :)
-
Yeah, that's always a good excus.... umm, I mean yes, artistic style, definitely! ;D

Okay, next up: a follower of some -probably evil- cult.

Frightening! They must have very spooky trees where he comes from - looks like the skull grew on it :-o
-
Yeah, the skull grew on the branch. I'm no botanist so I can't tell you which sort of tree this is... :D
----------
Next one, it's sort of a remake or follow-up of an old pencil drawing. The old one can be seen in the blog-post (https://eysventura.wordpress.com/2019/05/13/bonehead-0025/) too.

Fitting, with the rain :)
(and very cute, too)

Oh, there's another favorite for me!
Fits our weather here too -- although ours started out as snow, then turned to rain!
Might have to grab a t-shirt for this one!

Fitting, with the rain :)
(and very cute, too)
Glad to hear. And yeah, I'm really glad I reconsidered and went with this background instead of the other one.
Oh, there's another favorite for me!

Snow, really? In May? Wow, we haven't seen snow in a while. The last winter was cold and unpleasant but mostly without snow. The one before wasn't much better. At least we've had some (much needed!) rain recently. So that's a plus at least. Anyway... I'm happy to hear this made it into your favorites list. I certainly had a lot of fun making it. Also, in case you get yourself a shirt, I'd love to see some "photographic evidence" ;D
-
Yes, this is what we call "Springtime in the Rockies"! Not that the I'm actually IN the Rockies - more like beside the Rockies. But snow is part of our normal experience in the spring, even in May. Typically it doesn't stick on the ground, and if it does, it melts fast. I've seen snow in June before (and rarely as early as Sept)! Now we're moving into the summer routine, which means thunderstorms. Last week I saw the heaviest hailstorm I've ever seen -- 2 inches deep of hail on the ground! The newly leafed out trees have been completely stripped of leaves. It's an adventure, just living in Colorado! I think it was 1989 or 90, we had baseball size hail.
I was looking at the red bubble store. But the ones which have the rain have black sleeves. Or you could change it to white, I guess, but I just haven't seen one like that before. I thought it would be the whole image in a rectangle, on the shirt. Although I guess the artwork shows up better, the way you have it. Because shrink it all down into a rectangle, and you wouldn't see the details.
Is it available as a poster or print? Then I could get a shirt without rain, but see the rain part in the poster.
PS
I'm not sure if you keep up with community developments, or if you even see the front page of this forum. So just in case, this forum will be effectively (but technically not completely) closed starting in August. A new forum has been built on the Inkscape website, so we'll be switching Inkscape support to that forum, when it opens in August. We'll still keep all the tutorial resources here though, since the Inkscape website doesn't want 3rd party links.
You would still be able to post messages here, but there won't be as much traffic in the forum as there is now.
We don't know what will happen with InkscapeForum.com. We haven't had any contact with microUgly in almost a year. I suspect it will eventually die, when some software upgrade comes along, and he doesn't have time to do it.
-
It's an adventure, just living in Colorado!
Hahaha, nice one! :D
As for the clothing options.. Yes, on most of the shirts I used a character-only version of the image. I often do that, especially when the image is in a rather wide format like 16:9, which I use frequently, like in this case. Like you said, if the entire picture were to fit on a shirt, it would be rather smallish... probably looking as if somebody stuck a postcard on it.
Posters and different kinds of prints are available too.
Btw thanks for the PS. I have to admit that I don't really keep up with community stuff and haven't seen the front page and announcements in a while. Looks like it's time for another migration again soon... losing 8 years of personal history and a combined ~300k views from this and the inkscapeforum thread *sob* :D Ah well, the world keeps turning.
-
Not lost! Look at the archive which an Inkscape developer made for us. This way, we still have InkscapeForum as a resource. It's updated regularly, at least until InkscapeForum finally dies, so we keep everything.
http://alpha.inkscape.org/vectors/www.inkscapeforum.com/
Are the prints at redbubble too? I looked under Wall Art but searching your username didn't find anything.
Edit
Nevermind, I found it. Weird, if I search your name, it says "we found a person by that name, but no works". But if I go to your profile, then I find all the works.
Yay! Not sure if I can take a photo wearing the tshirt, but I'll try.
-
Not sure if I can take a photo wearing the tshirt, but I'll try.
Haha, that's okay. You don't have to if it's too much trouble or you simply wouldn't feel comfortable with it.
With "lost" I meant that I'm gonna have to start over with a new thread again. It would be awesome if we could simply migrate entire threads, with view count and everything and keep them going in the new place. But hey, in the end it's just abstract numbers anyway.

Yeah, apparently that FB group has been running contests and stuff. I wish they would announce it outside of FB. Contrary to popular opinion, not everyone on the face of the earth is a member of FB (or visits the group very often). And announcing it to the whole community might be interesting to others. They might even want to participate.
I'm hoping to get some challenges going in the new forum, as soon as it opens.
-
Oh yes, there have been many challenges in the group. Problem is that in order to participate, you'd need to be logged into FB anyway. So I guess there's really not much point in announcing stuff outside if you can't take part if you don't use FB. I'm not saying join FB if you haven't done so yet, but for everybody who already has an account, it's definitely worth joining this group. I don't know how much they're "moderating away" but people are usually very friendly and helpful.
