So I recently installed the newest version of Inkscape (version 0.92.3) and im having issues with importing DXF files. When i attempted to import a DXF file as i have done many times with the previous version of Inkscape i noticed there is no DXF file extension in the drop down menu, and when i tried dragging and dropping the file directly into the Inkscape file i get an error message "failed to load requested file".

Has anyone else had this problem? I am hoping there is something i can do short of reinstalling the older version of Inkscape.

Which dropdown menu do you mean?

Usually when you open a file, you don't need to choose the extension.  You just locate the file you want, and click on the file.  I guess if the folder is huge, it might help to select the extension first.

If you mean the dialog with titlebar "Select file to open" (or "Select file to import"), I see DXF pretty much in the middle of the menu.  Although it very much depends on the contents of the folder, I think.  Note that the DXF item is "AutoCAD DXF R13 (*.dxf)".

Do you remember which DXF format version it was that you were using? I have Autocad DXF R13 in my list.

It should be available for you on Windows, too.
Can you give us a list of the extensions that are available in Inkscape's share\extensions folder on your disk? (i.e. append a text file)

i cannot choose it from the file drop down menu for importing either, so im guessing they just completely removed Dxf from this version of inkscape im gonna have to uninstall and get the older version again

So i fixed it by re downloading version 0.92 so i reccomend not using 0.92.3 until they finish ironing out all the issues.

Have you seen my comment requesting more info?

Please don't make recommendations to others based on incomplete info.

Your post here is the first time I read about the issue, which I think means that it's probably related to just your own system, or maybe to how you installed Inkscape.

Can you tell us whether you updated, or if you uninstalled, then installed the new version? Also, which file did you use for installation?

dxf import support has not been removed. It is available on Linux, it also is on Win10. If you would like to profit from the bug fixes made in the three versions you are now behind, please answer my questions.

Yes we also had the default, Autocad DXF R13 in our list with version 0.92. As with every other version we've tried to date.

We used the installer https://inkscape.org/en/release/0.92.3/windows/ 64bit installation.

Have no interest in profiting from bug fixes. We ended up just uninstalling 0.92.3 and going back to version 0.92.

The main reason we tried 0.92.3 was because we had an issue with the courier font bug.

Thanks anyway

Hhmm, my menu is 2 or 3 times longer than what you showed.  Mine is just like what you showed for 0.92.  So I think you were missing a whole lot of formats there.

Would you be willing to reinstall that version?  You don't need to uninstall 0.92.  Just download the 7z version of 0.92.3, and you can "install" it just like with any zip file.  The reason I'm asking that, is if there is a bug, that is a fairly serious bug, and we should get it investigated.

If you do reinstall it, and the problem seems to be solved, then I would guess there was a problem with installing it the first time.  We won't know what it was, but at least we will know there's not a serious bug like that.

But if the problem is still there, you can help us to investigate.  I think what Moini meant by "profitting from a bug fix" means that you could have the benefits of the font bug being fixed, as well as potentially the benefits of fixing the DXF (and many other formats that are missing) import bug (if it turns out to be a bug).

Or, if you happen to remember, when you installed 0.92.3, did you click on something that said something like 'update Inkscape over your previous version'.  If you remember doing that, it would at least put our minds at ease about having such a serious bug potentially happening (it would mean the "update" option probably caused the problem - we already know about some other problems it causes).

Somehow, I had overlooked the screenshot link, sorry about that.

My recommendation would be to:
- uninstall Inkscape (completely!)
- reinstall it

I believe that will fix the problem. It's also mentioned on the website that updating Inkscape (without uninstalling) can result in incomplete functionality.

Additionally, if anyone with that problem who is interested in having the issue fixed comes along, please run Inkscape from the command line and paste the output here if the above suggestion does not help.

we had uninstalled the previous version of inkscape (0.92) completely before attempting to install the newer version (0.92.3) so we never used the update option.

Mmh, that's very weird, then. In that case, I guess the command-line output and a screenshot of the share\extensions folder will be useful (from someone who wants the issue fixed). But it appears it's not a widespread issue, at least.

Yes we were very surprised by it but for now we are just going to continue using version 0.92 and perhaps attempt using the newer version later on thank you for your help. :-D
