I am trying to draw a rectangle with borders only with no fills.  For the life of me, I could not figure out how to do it with Inkscape.  I watched Joshua Redin's video on these tools.  They are interesting things to learn but as far as I can see there is nothing about drawing the borders. I feel destroyed after many hours' struggling.  This seems to me is one of the most useful things people use to highlight any content of a document, a red circle, a green box.  And I was not able to draw the border.  If someone could go through the trouble to show me how, I would greatly appreciated.

Ooohh, I see what happened!  You have run into the problem which this little tutorial explains how to fix.

I've been talking to developers (over some time now), and trying to get them to remove from Inkscape the possibility of drawing invisible objects.  I truly hope they can put it into the new version 1.0 which is coming soon.

Thank you, brinn.  This does solve my problem.  I hope I will not be falling in the trap again.  I do think the developers need to make it more transparent.

(1) Draw any shapes
(2) Make sure the shapes are toggles by click
(3) Fill : X
(4) Stroke paint : grey box just right of the X
