I new to this.
I have been using inkscape for about 6 months, and I am stepping up by knowledge by trying to make this.

It's and ornament and what is making this a challenge for me, is I have to remove the background to leave the name intack.

I have tried a few things but no luck.
If I could get set in the right direction, I would appreciate it.
thanks in advance

Basically, you make a circle, put a rectangle above it, subtract it from the circle with Path > Difference, type the name, put it into the correct position so it overlaps a bit with the circle remainders, and do Path > Union.

In addition to this, use the Align+Distribute dialog to properly center align things (I skipped that).

thanks
I did most of that, I don't think I overlapped enough and I know I didn't "union" them.

appreciate it.

Got it,
but path union wouldn't work at first.  tred "object group".  wasn't sure.
shut down program and tried path union and it worked.  go figure.
but won't my laser  cut my letters out from the top and bottom.

I'm not sure what I'm reading wrong.  I've re-read the first message about 10 times now.  It sounds like he wants to remove everything except the text.  Or maybe wants to remove the tree from the background and leave the ornament intact?

But Moini's explaining how to draw something like that.  So I'm very confused!

Before I make a suggestion, I want to make sure I understand correctly.

What I am trying to do, is cut out the outside of the circle and the outside of the letters.

like the pix in my first post--so the letters/name are hooked to the top and bottom of the circle.

Yes, there is a path left. Did you really do a union, or are there still groups in your drawing? Do not group anything.
