Hi Friends,
Let's have a new contest -- draw a poster!

It could be a poster for anything, real or made-up.  It could advertise some kind of event, such as party, concert,  movie, or sporting event.  Or it could be some kind of imagery, like landscape or nature oriented.  Or even something abstract, such as inspirational, or I'm thinking of those psychedelic posters of the 60's!  (omg, how fun would that be?!!)  (I might have to try it )  Or it could even be about some kind of social movement, like for a club....or could even be political.....or about a book, any famous or historical person or event, music, bands, albums, like for a release party or something.  Just throwing some ideas out there.  Any kind of poster.  Please feel free to jump in, if you have other ideas.  :)

When we started the decorated egg contest, I got side-tracked playing with the egg shape.  I ended up with interesting objects, but the only thing I could think to do with them, was to put them in an imaginary poster, which is attached.  So that's just an example of an imaginary poster.  (I know, it a bit bizarre  :uhoh:) (and not terribly clever either -- but an example  :uhoh:)

I'm actually still working on something for the fireworks drawing challenge, but it's almost finished.  So I'll probably start sketching out some ideas for a new poster.

So anyway, this could make for a great contest album, in the gallery, if any of you Inkscapers out there want to participate.  Remeber, the winner gets their image showcased on the front page of the gallery!  (Winner determined by gallery ratings.)

Ahoy!

Poster contest? That sure can involve almost everything.

Alot of great examples on the net.

Basically it's for the gallery front page?
Will have to keep that in mind for the size and for the theme.

Also, if it will be based on gallery ratings, a new contest gallery folder would help the voting.

A fun idea for the poster:

Spiro path in focus.
It's impossible not to like this random shape generating feature.
(Only one node was moved between the two images.)

I know it's a bug, but I absolutely LOVE playing with it!   My fav is spiro turkey

You can make it happen by scaling a spiro object, as well as moving a node or nodes, or rotating....any transform, I guess.  I use the 90 degree rotate buttons and both flips (on control bar), to try and make interesting shapes.     Maybe I'll use for a psychedelic poster!

Yes, I'll make a new album for the contest.  I just ran out of time the other day....then forgot  :@@:.  Well, any contest winner gets their image on the front page.  But with just the 2 of us, it won't really work.  But I am ready to change the front page again, whether more people join the contest or not.  Maybe I'll put my dictionary image for a while.

I suppose that's some well known character that I've never heard of?

Edit
The size and theme of the poster doesn't matter.  But we will need a version in appropriate size for the front page.  It can always link to the full size.

Just a random rage comic face.

At least spiro is stabile enough and not crashes if cannot decide the right shape.

Work in progress, so they say.

A bit too gloomy, will try to add a bolder colour scheme and upload that in the gallery folder.

Very nice!

Quite fractalish.  Sort of looks like scales on some dinosaur tails!  I would try background of a steely blue color, rather than gray.  Could be all that's needed to brighten it up some?  That bg texture must be raster, essentially?

I think it's gorgeous like it is.  But color variations are always fun  :D

Thank's!

The colours were similar to that attachment's, thought that's not that kind of coffee that is inviting enough. Which would be a must for a gallery front-pager.
The background texture is filtered with a jam texture, I don't like the highlights of it's diffuse shader.
Slightly larger version here.

Probably a pearl would look nice in the centre too.

Oh, well the difference is that a kitchen is a likely place to find a coffee cup, and plus, that's kind of what I was thinking when I was drawing it.  But your drawing is abstract -- it has no relation to anything (except for that slightly dinosaur-tail that it reminds me of).  The color options are quite numerous, and it still would look great.

To me, in really good abstract art, the design (of course) has to be awesome.  In what I think of as really good abstract art, the design could really stand alone, without color, and still be outstanding.  But after the color is added, the design becomes simply a structure to hold the color.  Not that I'm really a trained artist or anything though, lol  :D

That's the kind of gray cloudiness?  I agree, it is kind of a gloomy color scheme.  But on abstract art, I'm not sure it matters.  Maybe it would be interesting to see a couple of different color schemes?  I like to do that -- when I make a sort of abstract design, then give it 2 or 3 color schemes.  However, in the end, it usually comes down to whatever mood I'm in at the moment  :-D

I agree about a possible pearl in the center -- although I would find it quite challenging to draw a pearl :D

Challenging to draw a pearl?
There is even a tutorial on something similar at inkscape's page that is six year old. I didn't think about something more complicated. A few blurring and clipping, but not much.

Here it is:

There is a small issue in it because I didn't take enough care to figure out a better way of doing the objects partial hiding behind eachother -same with the previous image-, but maybe it doesn't show through.

Oh yeah, that is gorgeous!!

Regarding drawing a pearl -- I guess I was thinking about how the swirl objects, the gold and blue parts (in this version) would create reflections on the pearl.  But I was thinking of the pearl being smaller, and recessed into the center hole.  As it is this way, you wouldn't expect to see any reflections, at least not from the swirl objects.  I think I was also thinking more of something more like an opal, partially translucent.

Anyway, it looks great!

Thank's again!

That z-order problem still bothers me.
Looks like for a better rendering, the inner parts should be on top, while the pattern would look better if the outer parts would be there.

In practice, copy&pasting one spiral simply won't solve it.
Each of the two spirals circle sectors has to be at the same z-order, so it's rather groups of two sectors, stacked above eachother,
than two groups of many parts.

I'm not sure what parts you're talking about.  I was going to look at it more closely, but it looks like you uploaded a PNG this time.

So I don't know if this will solve the problem.  But if you put some shadows in the area where the green shape is (in attachment), the spirals could appear like the center is rising towards the viewer.

Under the partially tranparent red oval, there's some gold color peeking out, and if you look really closely, there's a slight gold blur around the whole thing.  I'm not sure if that's part of your background texture, or something else.

The yellow glow was intentional.

Good idea with the shade, will try it sometime.

Here was the anti-aliasing issue:

By exporting into a larger png and scaling down outside it almost wanishes.

The method in my previous post can solve the issue.

Oh wait. With shadows added, the z-order should be reconsidered again -as hiding the shadow behind the object is the only way to make it appear crystal sharp.
Can think of a solution yet that can apply only to this image.
But if the spiral had more turn, it wouldn't work. Challenging.

Have been working on Fibonacci spirals lately.
These fractals are based on the same golden ratio:

The original svg was close to 100 MB, no matter the accuracy was dropped heavily in the preferences-svg output.

Ok, here's a wip on the bricks.  Only the front part of the brick pathway has colors that are probably close to what I want.  All the other colors are just placeholders for now.  The back part of the pathway will eventually be consistent with the front part, with filters and all

The brick pathway is pretty heavily filtered!  4 in all.  Didn't use any mask so far, just gradients, which seems to help make the filters sort of have perspective.  It's supposed to look like a brick pathway with the bricks set in gravel.  I don't love the gravel texture (filter) but I do love the brick texture.  The current gravel filter depicts a pretty large gravel, and it would probably work better with a smaller grade of gravel.  So that one will probably change.

I may have found a secret for working with a lot of filters, that seems to be preventing the frequent crashes that I often encounter when working with a lot of filters in one file.  As long as I don't do much Undo-ing, there's no crash.  Happy dance!   :hd:

Comment welcome on wip  :D

So much filtering already?
That's a brave one in my opinion.
The perspective is mixed which suits well with the psychedelic concept, wondering why you try to add a photorealistic fill to the objects.
Thought it would go in a similar style as presented here by IXniveK.

Yeah, I really want to do somthing that's not very realistic, someday.  But I start drawing, and somehow that's what comes out  :duh:

But I look at it today, and already, it seems a little too much.  Who knows what will happen?  :-P  The bricks and gravel need some kind of depth, but what's there now might be too much.  The bricks need to look like they are sunk into the gravel....at least that was my first goal.  But now, they look like they are hovering over it.  Actually, that's kind of a psychedelic effect.....maybe I'll go towards that idea?

One thing I just realized yesterday.  When the canvas is blank is the hardest part.  As soon as there is some simple sketch or even just a single object drawn, the rest of the drawing starts to materialize in my mind.  I've been really frustrated, over my life, in seeing something in my mind, and not being able to reproduce it on paper or computer screen.  So this is kind of a major shift in how I approach making "art".  Rather than seeing something in mind from the start, what I see changes as I go....very much more like a process.

I'm working on another image that's a little more like the abstract one you linked....well, at least it's sort of abstract.  I think those (that you linked) could be improved with some depth.  Although clearly that guy is consistent in his style.

"Psychedelic" can really cover a lot of ground -- it can mean things like in your "op-artish" topic at IF where there is sort of optical illlusions, in the drawing, but with mundane colors; or like fractals.  Or to the other end, which is a rather mundane drawing, but with neon, bright, or blacklight colors.  Like this could almost be considered psychedelic.  Or these or even this.

But anyway -- back to work.  Thanks for your comments  :D

Here's a quick, bright poster -- nothing special.  I might tweak the colors, to look like black light colors, but I'll have to study how to do that first.  Maybe can make more psychedelic, but here it is for this version.  :D

PS - see full size for best effect.....although small size creates interesting optical illusion.....somehow.....or maybe it's the browser.....??

Oh yes, !

Visuals went a long way from the to . Overloading the conscious brain with visual -and what not- overkill to reach the unconscious mind.

Nice effect with the colours, it really pops. Black light imitation would need less white -only saturated tones-, and a dark background.

Hipotrochoid with the spirograph:

Original svg here.

Many idea was on my mind how to make it a more straightforward capture of the working method of the extension but it could go on for ever so decided to upload it in this form. The "fancyness" was added to it with gimp as usual.

Finished one version of one of the psychedelic posters I set out to make.  Eventually I hope to make a slightly different version, with different effects and/or colors.   But this is this version.

You have to think of it with black light colors.
