I'd like to know how an artwork can land in this gallery.
Is it the artist who asks for it, is it the site admins who find it and asks the artist ?
Do they all have to be licenced in GPL or CC ?

Make an account at inkscape.org, then use the little image icon at the top to upload pictures into your gallery.

Yes, you can upload yourself.  It's been so long since I reg'd there, I don't remember where the link is to register.  But it shouldn't be too hard to find.

There are multiple choices for licenses, ranging from public domain to full copyright, with many options in between.  However, because some community members think the "free" theme should be favored, there's no link on the front page of the gallery, to filter by that license.  While all the "free" type of licenses can be filtered by a single click.  You'll see all the choices once you get to the upload form.

I'll be happy to see some of your work there!

Thanks for this info, but my question was more "how does artwork get to the official gallery that is on this page https://inkscape.org/fr/gallery/?page=1 ?", not a personal gallery.
So I guess it first has to be uploaded by an artist using his account and then if the admins consider it should be featured there they put it there ? But does the artist have to explicitly ask for it ?
The reason I ask is not because I want to submit my own art (I'm a Blender artist so my Inkscape art is rudimentary) but instead because I found some amazing Inkscape art on the web and I'd like to suggest their authors to submit it so it may land on this gallery.
And the reason for THAT... is because from time to time I meet some independant Illustrator artists who never heard of Inkscape (I know, right ?) and I want to show them how cool this program is. And the best way to do that is to show the best artwork made with it. So the gallery from inscape.org should be the place to go for that.
The gallery already has some amazing work, but I think some is missing, like this for example which was a splash screen candidate I think, or some artwork from Kevin Philippe or Remi Larroque

Actually there is a feature that will allow anyone to upload a link to anyone else's image or tutorial or whatever kind of resource.  However, if you only upload a link to something, it doesn't have a thumbnail so that you can see what the image is.  You have to follow the link to be able to see it.  So far, I haven't understood the need for this type of upload.  But it's possible, if you want to use it.

Images get to be on the front page of the gallery because they have been marked as Favorites, more than any other images.  (If you're registered and logged in, you'll see a little star icon for marking something as a favorite.)

There's currently no way to request special billing.  Although I think it has been discussed the possibility of having something like a Featured Images section, or something like that.  But I don't think it's ever moved past discussing as possible.

I think it's a shame that more people don't look through the older gallery images, because there are many which deserve to be on the front page.  But they can only get on the front page if members mark them as favorites.  It's just that apparently not many people are interested to sort through the entire gallery, now that it's gotten so large.  And unfortunately, people are voting only on that first page of images, and the great ones that live further back, are probably never even seen.

Yes, the image you gave a link to was an About screen contest entry a few years ago.  I don't think it was the winning entry, but was the runner-up.  I think there's a good chance that a lot of the images you want to see might already be there.  That one you linked to is there.  You just have to look around or search around to find it.  You could try searching for the artist name, to find out if they might already be uploaded.  (Although if the artist doesn't use their real name...  Well, just a thought.)

To be honest, I think you have a valid point.  I had made a feature request a couple of years ago, when the gallery was still brand new, to have the front page, or first few pages moderated.  In the scenario I imagined, moderators would choose the best images, and perhaps rotate them around, so the gallery doesn't get stale.  But it hasn't really worked out exactly like I had imagined.

It would be reasonable to make a feature request, even if you don't know exactly how it would work.  Just requesting that some way can be found so that all the many great images which are hidden, can be rotated to the front from time to time, is a reasonable request.  If you'd like to make such a request, you can create a New Issue on gitlab, where the project's...I think the entire repo is there now.  If I copied the right thing, this should be a link to open a new Issue:  https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-web/issues/new.

Part of the problem for me, in marking images as favorites, is that once they are marked, they become part of your profile.  And personally I don't want to clutter up my profile with 30 or 40 favorites.  I have thought that I might register another account (with different email) and uses it only for voting favorites.  But just one more person voting won't have much effect.

Like Inkscape, Inkscape's website is work-in-progress.

Thanks, I will make a request.
Just to clear things out : your idea is to have the gallery shuffled or rotated, say every week or so, instead of sorting by number of stars ?
Or is it to have moderators pick a few good old ones and bring them to the top among the most starred ones every now and then ?
Also, what's all this random stuff we start seeing from page 20 ? There are inkscape versions, text files, screenshots and all kinds of things that don't seem to belong in the gallery.
(;゜○゜) Does the gallery actually show all the files of any type uploaded by all the members ?

Ok, so I didn't give you a full overview of the gallery before.

The gallery is not a true gallery, as most people think of it.  Anything which Inkscape uses or creates can be uploaded there, including the program files and including any kind of random text ("pastebin").

Perhaps the best way to show your friends about Inkscape, would be to tell them to choose the Artwork filter under "Media Category" (all in the column to the right of the images).  But even that way, it still depends on Favorites, as to which images are on the front page.  (Or views, if you choose Most Viewed).

Actually, Most Viewed probably shows the best selection.  But even so, people don't look more than a few pages into the 100+ pages of the gallery.

(Holy Crap!  There are a whole bunch of new filters showing today.  They're brand new!  And I have no idea what they are....?  Maybe they will provide a better option for you, once we understand what they are.  The developers are just starting with the 3rd Annual Hackfest, so we probably won't find out what they are until next week.)

In any case, my idea was to have a moderator (or moderators) choose the best images for the front page, and from time to time, rotate them.  That was my original feature request.  Shortly after that, they created the Favorites, and Most Viewed, and other options.  So since that more or less ensures the best images are on the front page, at least theoretically, I allowed my request to be closed.

I actually have an email that I started a year ago or so, still saved in my Drafts folder (to send to the mailing list), to start a discussion about why the Favorites feature isn't working.  So far, I haven't found a good time to bring up the subject.  I think the biggest problem is that people just aren't interested in using it.  The image with the highest Favorites is just 22.  And the gallery has been around for almost 3 years, if I recall correctly.  People either are only voting images, or viewing images that are on the first couple of pages, when there are amazing images way back in the gallery.

I don't know if it would be more effective to have a moderator (or moderators) doing it.  That would inject a lot of subjectivity, compared to the current methods.

Perhaps the best suggestion would be to review the effectiveness of the most popular and most viewed display options.  Maybe there would be some changes that could be made, to make it more effective.

Like for example, what if the whole gallery, except for the first page, gets shuffled from time to time.  Then when people do decide to view or mark favorites, they'll have a chance to see images from further back?  The first page would stay the same, relative to votes or views, but then other images would start getting votes and views.

I have no idea if that's even possible.  But we don't know what kind of solutions there might be, if we don't start the discussion.

@brynn: The gallery didn't change at all, all functionality has been identical for months (aside from the 'hidden' icons for moderation).

Martin and I have previously (shortly) talked about implementing some sort of hacker news algorithm that would take several things into account and weigh them differently, to calculate a final score for images for ordering. We didn't follow up on it, though, and I can't find it now.

If you want more people to favourite items in the gallery, you need to make a news article and social media buzz, to tell them that it's possible to log in and upload stuff. Most people don't know that they can use the gallery to show off their work.

You mean all that list of Galleries in the column on the right, at the bottom, when you choose the Artwork category, is not new?  It's possible I've never looked at the bottom of that page, and never have seen it.  What is it for, or how does it work?  I wonder if that could somehow help ChameleonScales?

Yes, I realize talking up the Favorites feature might result in more people using it.  But that alone won't solve the problem as I see it.  But since most of my suggestions for the website lately, have been immediately closed (with very little explanation) I'm not planning to make any new ones.

Slightly off topic, but how should gallery features be requested?

Would like to see openclipart's thumbnail generating implemented. Having tons of filter packs there, for mirroring it would take generating new thumbnails for each svg one by one and uploading them.
Ocal uses inkscape in the process by the way.

As far as I know, make a new Issue report at gitlab.  Here's where the website development is managed (now):  https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-web.  And there must be a link on that page for making a new Issue.

What is it for, or how does it work?

They filter the results. Just try it out :)

@Lazur: Martin knows about that, he tried it, and couldn't install Inkscape on the old machine that our server is. When we have a new one, this might become possible.

I see that.  But how are those galleries created?  How did they get to be in that list?  Because there are 2 by the same name, and some others with weird names, I'm thinking users created them.  But I don't know how.

I have another question now : Can't I see more than 4 of my favorites ? There doesn't seem to be any way to navigate them.

Well, I made my own "best of" gallery from several websites using Pearltrees (a Pinterest-like system, but having some nice features Pinterest doesn't have).
Check it out here and tell me what you think and which ones you would add (or remove) so we build it up !

Yes, I think Martin deactivated pagination for the favorites, because it caused issues... You can open a bug report for it here:

If Martin deactivated it, it means fixing it is not a high priority for him, and it isn't for me either now, since I prefer making my selection from multiple websites using Pearltrees. So I won't be the one asking for it.

Thanks for the info, Maren.  But I still don't understand how the galleries get to be in that list.

I already have one gallery for myself, and I see how to make more.  I would make a test, except it's not clear if I will be able to delete it later (since I don't really need a new one).

Is that list all the newest galleries that members have created?  As more new ones are created, older ones get bumped off the list?

CS, I'm glad you found a suitable way to show your favorite images.  It really is a shame that Inkscape's own gallery can't do this (imo).

A look into the website code tells me that there doesn't seem to be a limit to the number of galleries, but I could be wrong.
https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-web/blob/master/resources/views.py#L394

But when creating the gallery, you must assign a matching category (Artwork, extensions, ...) to be displayed in that category on the global gallery.

I found out recently (the hard way I might add) that adding keywords is not working;
nor the selected files location to be uploaded are stored -so after each failed attempt due to errenous keywords you have to repeat selecting the files every time.

Tags are broken, see https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape-web/issues/44 (Martin tried to fix an issue that Lazur reported, and it broke tags as a whole).
