I'm using version 0.92.4 and I was following this tutorial

()

and the first time I went through it everything seemed to work fine.  I''m trying to hone my skills so if I like a tutorial I will repeat it several times.

The second time I went through it, I couldn't get the Path to Union work on text that had been converted to a path.  I'm very sure it worked for me the first time and it works for the person doing the tutorial.  I don't know if I hit some key stroke that caused this to change some preference or what happened but I've rebooted both Inkscape and my computer and I'm still having the same issue.  If I try the same union prior to converting the text to path it works but as soon as I convert it to a path the union command no longer works.

If you want to go to the spot on the tutorial it's just past the 6 minute mark.

I don't know if anyone else has encountered this or if someone can tell me what I am doing wrong, would love any suggestion. I've tried using google to find a solution but not finding anything out there like this.

Welcome to the forum!

When you convert text to path (using Object to path) it does convert it to paths, but it also puts it in a group or groups.  So that's probably why Union won't work on it, at that point.

About where in the video does the author do this?  Just so I don't have to watch the whole 12 minutes.

In the tutorial she is using the the Union command at just over the 6 minute mark.  There is no group of text though it's on just the number 7 in this tutorial and then it's duplicated and one of the 7s is turned upside down.  The other thing I noticed is that when I went back to try it again, it seems to work or not work sporadically.  I got it to work on one of the 7s then tried it on the other and it didn't work.  I then hit control Z to undo the 7 it worked on to see if I could repeat it and when I tried the union command again it didn't work.  Seems really quirky, not sure if it's an issue with my computer or there is a bug in this latest version of Inkscape, or something I am doing.  Thanks for your help on this!

Ok, I'll have a look at the video.  But you might want to share your SVG file as well.  It could be something in the file that you didn't realize you did, or forgot you did, or didn't realize what it was doing, or etc.  You know, the learning process  :)  So we can find out specifically what's happening by looking at the file.

Hhm, I haven't seen any clues in the video, so I would definitely need to see your SVG file, to figure it out.

I saved the svg file at the place where I am having a challenge.   I can't get that added piece that's in light blue to union with the modified 7.

Ungroup the red and blue parts before you try to union.

Always look into the status line at the bottom to get info about things, esp. when they do not work.

I see what you are saying, even after I ungrouped them from each other it still showed that each one of them was still a group of 1 and I had to ungroup it again.  Thank you for your help this was driving me crazy.
