Text over different layer

Hi guys, I'm making a topo map with contours. Each coloured contour represents a different elevation and layer which I will cut out. I want to place my text over the countours, so I only have to cut out certain parts of the words for each layer/contour.

So you want to essentially cut the text into pieces, using the lines in your drawing for cutting?

Do:

- Select all lines that will cut through the text
- Duplicate those (Ctrl+D)
- Keep the selection. Now do Ctrl+K to combine them into a compound path.
- Make sure the lines are now above the text (move up or move to another layer if necessary)
- Select text and cutting lines.
- Do Path > Division
- Now move the text parts to their correct layers

That process which Moini mentioned will prepare the text to be split up into the different layers.  But I'm not clear if you want the text to be joined with the contour lines, or just on top of the lines.  If the text is to be on top of the lines, the text pieces will be separate paths. 

If you want the contour lines joined with the text, so that the text is cut out as part of the same contour line, some more editing will be needed.
