Stuck on a Tutorial? / Re: Multiple pages PDF file opening
« Last post by brynn on July 28, 2019, 06:25:27 PM »
I also don't know which tutorial that might be.

When you open a multiple page PDF with Inkscape, Inkscape can only open one page (as far as I know).  When you try to open any PDF file, you will first see a small dialog with a few different options to choose from.  At the very top is a small dropdown menu where you can choose which page you want to open.

Although if you install a special extension, I think you can open multiple page PDFs.  There are 3 different extensions, and as far as I could see (when I recently needed one) they all work (and install) a little bit differently.  So if you have one of these extensions installed, please tell us which one.

Inkscape Beginners' Questions / Re: How to set default style for text tool?
« Last post by brynn on July 28, 2019, 06:13:53 PM »
I conclude that Inkscape never really did include font as part of the style it remembers for the text tool preferences. Whether this is by design or a bug, I do not know. Maybe the intent was only to ever work on attributes common to all tools. The end result seems quite confusing to me.

I would not have expected the font to be included in the style.  There's a separate setting for your default font, for some reason, only accessible in the Text and Font dialog.  (Although it never has worked properly for me.)

Everything works fine for me in 0.92.3.

I tried in 1.0 alpha, but after trying to change the style, the Text tool stopped working.  I think it might be related to that stupid line spacing issue.  But I'm planning to get a more current 1.0 alpha later tonight.  So I'll test again, and report back.

In my version of 1.0 alpha (using win32 theme), the interface is so broken, it's hard to tell much of anything about what's happening.  So maybe I'll have better luck with a more current version.

Inkscape Beginners' Questions / Re: rubber stamp making

When you say you want certain portions raised, are you thinking Inkscape is a 3d modelling program?  Because it's not.  Inkscape can simulate 3d, by creating shadows and highlights.

Looking at the SVG file, it appears to be all ready to add fill color.  First, all the fills and strokes are unset, which should mean they look black, but instead, everything is invisible.  (I don't know why.)  So I had to do Select All, and add a stroke, to see the paths.  Then you'll be able to see which path you want to fill with which color.

Help menu > Tutorials > Basic, Shapes and Advanced.  Those 3 tutorials will give you a good start, and probably tell you everything you need to know.

Inkscape Beginners' Questions / Re: DWrite.dll not found
« Last post by brynn on July 28, 2019, 05:16:36 PM »
The reason there is so much discussion about bugs and weird behavior is that this is primarily a support forum.  New users see all sorts of behavior that they think is weird, but really they just don't understand.

Also, because Inkscape is an open source program (not proprietary) the entire community, including ordinary users, are both capable of, and encouraged to report problems.  We all want to make Inkscape better.  So speaking personally, if someone reports something that doesn't seem right to me, I want to investigate, and make sure that a bug report is not needed.

In proprietary programs, they don't want bugs to see the light of day, because it will cost them money.  So they keep all that discussion in private channels.

Inkscape Beginners' Questions / Re: Problem : Bezier curves cut by the area

Without a screenshot to be sure, I'm guessing the dashed line you're talking about -- it would be a dashed line rectangle -- is called the bounding box.  It will show up around whatever object you've selected.

The canvas is the entire drawing area, whether it's inside the page border or outside.  (The page border is a solid line rectangle, and can have a shadow and can be hidden, if you like.)

Hhmm, these on canvas controls must not be in my version of 1.0 alpha.  I'll have to download a more current version to test and try to answer your question.

Personally, I wouldn't file a bug report until we're sure everyone is talking about the same thing....  I can download later tonight, and then I'll post again, after I've tested.

However, I would echo my last comments, and hope that they can fix the problem, rather than add some new feature to control the problem.

1. Can you please link to that tutorial? I don't know about that one.
2. Please compare Inkscape version numbers with the one used in the tutorial.

Inkscape Beginners' Questions / Re: Equal spacing of holes in a rectangle.

If you create a second rectangle that's the same width and height as the distance between the circle centres and centre align it to the background one, you can snap the circle centres to the corners of it and then delete it afterwards.

If you don't need to edit the stroke again converting it to a path will let the blur display correctly.

Stuck on a Tutorial? / Multiple pages PDF file opening
« Last post by samtal on July 28, 2019, 02:14:29 AM »
Hi,
I followed the Inkscape PDF tutorial, and in that I saw that when opening a multiple pages PDF, a list of all pages was displayed on the side. When I open (or drag) such file, I can not see the pages list. What do I do wrong?
Thx
