[Solved] Reflect an object by a selected guide or path

Postby nikto » Thu Feb 25, 2016 4:58 am

Sorry, it's probably my fault... Is it possible to use a guide or a path as an axis to reflect an object?
Flip horizontal and vertical are very limited functions ...
Thanks

What often works for me is to use mirrored/angled Clones:

Indeed they are limited functions but you can only use those.
Meaning once you mirror, you will also need rotating and maybe translating too, depending on your workflow.
Snapping and guides can make the process easier.

There is the transformation matrix in the transformation panel, so probably that feature could easily be implemented.
Maybe worth a feature request at the bug tracker if it's not there already.

An incredible lack ... I'm really surprised.
Of course I respect the work of developers but I think this is a basic function in any vector graphic software.
A mirror tool must give the possibility to select the reference axis, an object, a guide or a path...
Without this possibility How can you do this??? (I make an example with illustrator ...)

or this???

Shifting the rotational center can help with this, although in OP's first example you still need to hit Flip Horizontal and Flip Vertical once.
Thats still easier than opening the dialog in Illustrator, choose the right options and click okay (in case that matters).

Yeah, but how did you get the reflected object in position ?

Is this a cloned group ?

Dear tylerdurden, I already own Illustrator, I'm using it for 14 years. To work.
Maybe next time try not to enter in a forum just to take the piss out of someone.
Anyway ..Thanks phenomenon.

So why do you need Inkscape if you already own Illustrator ?

Here is a quick idea how to achieve this with a spacer object:

That's the easiest I could think at the moment, possible to achieve in seconds.

(Mirroring horizontally and vertically results in rotating 180° -or mirroring around- a POINT, not an axis by the way. That wouldn't work on most objects to represent mirroring on an axis.)

Here is another one with another guide instead of a spacer object:

tylerdurden,I was trying to do the first project using inkscape just to understand if it would be possible to work with it instead of Illustrator....
I think it is not difficult to understand ...It was a trial.
As I can see from the eLazur URH explanation, till now, in this specific situation, inkscape requires too much work for an operation like this.
That's all. Now I try how cloned group works. Thanks

No, the Clone tool does not help me. The clone has to be mirrored and positioned in the right place ... and that's exactly the problem ...

Cloned groups can help you with mirroring many objects at a time while still being able to edit the object which isn't mirrored.
You edit the parent objects, the clones will change automatically, so you don't have to mirror each object one by one every time you edit one of them.

Like in this svg.

Yes clone tool is not useful in this case. In another forum they suggested me the Mirror extension in the Extension_repository.
Actually it is exactly what I need. Thank you all

The next version will also have a mirror path effect.

I'm a graphic designer and 99,9% of times we needs to mirror some individual elements and some not..
That feature is most useful for creating Rorschach inkblot and mandalas rather than for the every day most frequent operations .
In my opinion the important thing is not to create an "effect", but rather create a tool and place it in plain sight.
The transform panel could be the best place.

I wonder if it's in the dev version already? I don't use it, so I can't look it up.
