Well, there might not be a white glow object, but there's a glow there, that was somehow created.  Or maybe it's light blue area that doesn't have any shading.  If I can just finish catching up with email, I'm going to download it.

Simple bump filter, upon request at irc.

Aaand, now something "completely different".
Let's test out the forum's video embedding option -screen captured the process:

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/TGAWYKVLxQw" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Hmm neither them seems to work, the insert youtube video is not in the post editor panel either.

Anyway, the video should be .

Those glow filters are fun, Lazur! The kettles remind me of floating objects in a ghost story :)

For the "protrusion" kind of filter had to split the coffee maker from the group.
Real fun when the filter is animated (but how?).

Filter in action, some dragon speed drawing.

more donuts:

-this uses gaussian blur to generate the bumpmap, unlike the previous one using luminosity

The donuts in that Gaussian blur set look very realistic.

Also with that stone filter set to different flood colours, some metallic grunge:

-Started this topic a year ago, with a similar filter collection. Even if it's not the best one, hope the improvement is noticeable.

By the way, getting slightly off topic, will the two forums merge in a year time? If not, maybe I better start mirroring this topic there?
Frankly noone seems interested in using filters in inkscape. Probably I better off draw anything, but semi-finished material.

hatched teddybear

^this one is a "flattened" image, as I couldn't make it with filtering only and no raster images.
The problem was somehow inkscape couldn't pull in a group of objects with the image filter primitive, so used a bitmap copy of the hatching layout for the filter, created a raster copy of the result and bitmap traced it.
Here is the in progress image with the issue, if you want to check it.

No one seems to know about the new forum.  I guess I missed the last board meeting being sick.  And I haven't looked up the transcript to find out if it was discussed.

But the bottom line is that the project has no server which can hold the new forum.  Devs don't want to have the forum on a different host from the website.  The current host of the website apparently has no interest in hosting a forum.  Devs don't want to move to a new host, or seriously investigate self-hosting, or take any action at all, at least up until now.  It's just in limbo!

Personally, I'd rather have it on a different host, temporarily, until the server situation can be ironed out.  But I'm ready to push a little harder than I have been up til now.  I mean, I didn't want to offend anyone, not being all that experienced with community development.  But this is seriously ridiculous, by now.  I'm losing my patience, and I'll probably start to push harder for some action, now.

I did have a comment from doctormo (Martin) at the last board meeting I attended, about wanting to investigate a Django forum again.  He did manage to get more space for the website, and I think he wants to try and put a new forum on it.  But to me, the website is still too slow.  And adding a forum would just make it slower, and the forum would be slow too.  And I don't think the forum community, who are accustomed to decent speed, would tolerate it for very long.  And as we've seen, things move very slowly sometimes. What I mean is that even if we put a new forum on the website, with an agreement for better speed "soon".  "Soon" might never come.  People would get frustrated and eventually someone would start up a decent php forum again.  And then we'd be back where we started.

Well anyway,  I can't speak to how much interest there is in filter use.  I do think you've done an amazing job with all the filters you've been making!!  They really are so much better than some of the ones that are packed with Inkscape!  If I were to make any other comments besides that, it would be to maybe try to make a single filter which would be flexible enough to provide all the variations that you've been providing by the packs of filters.  So instead of a pack of filters with all the subtle variations, a single filter which can be varied using the Filter Editor, might be easier for people to use.  Maybe include a few notes which ways it could be edited to produce the variations (like in a readme file or something).

As for starting a topic on IF for your filters, I'm just not sure.  I think the whole forum issue is up in the air, almost as much as it was in the beginning.  (We haven't been able to contact Courtney again either, although we haven't really tried lately.  I don't know why bother, until we have a server to put the backup on.)  I might be getting a new server soon.  And if I do....well, there are a lot of "ifs", but at least it would be a place to put the backup.) (I was close to getting the backup on my current server, but when it came right down to doing it, my host balked.  But I suspect I'd have better luck with a different host.)

Whatever happens, I still intend to make sure that all 3 of these forums (including ICD) are combined into one.  (as long as we don't loose touch with Courtney again)  So that nothing posted in any of the forums will be lost.  (Although a lot of ICD might end up in read-only mode. And also some various pruning to bring IF up to more current needs.)  Realistically, they probably can't be combined all at once, because they are on 2 different software.  So one would have to be converted.  But it should be fairly easy to find someone to do the conversion on a one-time basis.  It just won't happen all at once.

Well, in the end, it's up to you.  But starting to mirror your topic on 2 forums, will just be one more thing to fix, when they finally are all merged.  I would leave it as is, for now.   But it's up to you.

Great. but it´s not seamless yes?

So probably people think these textures are restricted to a 300 px / 300 px square size?
With that much care what would happen if I'm pointing to the recent filter editor, suggesting to "change the fifth turbulence's base frequency from 0,018 to 0,236? It's ridiulous as is.

Hahaaa....Well, I wouldn't take that one comment as evidence for what everyone thinks.  It's just that guy.  And  I wouldn't think it was so much that he doesn't care, but that he just hasn't learned exactly what filters are, or how they can be used.  Clearly he has them confused with tilable raster textures!  He just needs to learn.

(But I do understand your frustration.  It rubs me the wrong way to see people making comments like that, who clearly don't know what they're talking about, and they're acting like they do.)

change the fifth turbulence's base frequency from 0,018 to 0,236

I would understand that.  And while a newbie might not get it right away, the user community could help them understand.  Or I'd be glad to help you write the instructions for variations in newbie-speak.....well, here and there anyway.  (I've just made so many commitments to the Inkscape project, and they'r all on hold without any clues when I can actually start the work.)  So if they all come due at the same time, I'd be pretty busy.  :f5: )

But anyway, I wouldn't get too concerned.  I think a lot of the community, the part of the community (which doesn't use forums) has no idea about all the filters you've been making, yet.  Personally, I'll probably be using your filters a lot, in the future.  It's just that I've committed myself to some projects on the development side, and don't have as much time to pretend to be an artist ( :wink1: )  But I know I'll be using them.  :)

Thought I'd give the egg filter pack another go to see if I can do better...
well, I could, Cairo couldn't. It just chokes even on command line export at small resolution.
Can hardly zoom in for 100% zoom level.

Here is a long rendered screenshot of the top half:

Got "finishhed" stopped working on it.

Started as a decent, organised one and ended up being a mess.
Cairo renderer refused even to export a 20 px/20 px image through command line the original image.

Initial filter was an "all in one" -generating the 4 colour painted texture, the bumps on the surface, deformed the egg shape, added the 3D shading, some defocus on the edges, and a dropshadow. (Before the 3D shading was made by a separate filter, which was even worse.)
Background is also filtered, and it has an overlaying filter atop.

Conclusions:
  • Don't use blending modes over the background when your rendered area is busy. It just won't render and your machine will crawl from it.
  • Don't even think about generating an overall 3D look with blur filters. Avoid blurring wherever possible and use minimal values if necessary.
  • Don't stitch a dropshadow in the filter chain, the filter editor is not capable of a handy adjustment.
  • Dropshadows may be more straightforward with a chosen blending mode, but that falls into the first and second point.
A radial gradient -or a gradient mesh- may need more tweaking, adjusting to the background colour, but in the end you will be more likely being able to render the result.
  • Speaking of overlay filters, "post processing" is a good thing. Export raster image without any overlay filter effects, and after, in another window open and export the previous raster image with the filter added. This is merely against the svg's scalability concept, yet that's eventually works at the exporting.
  • Objects may disappear at 200% zooming with current renderer...
How so? If it had a pattern fill, of a cloned group of objects, that's how. Or at least that was the case with this image. Too bad it clutters the outline only rendering mode if you use clones instead.

Looking at it again the bump texture seems to be applied only over several colour spots? Oh well couldn't care less.
If ever, I'd rework it from scratch. Current filter editor makes it impossible to track the rigging.

Edit: uploaded the svg to the inkscape gallery.

This one I'm not so satisfied with, but sharing it anyway.

Made with gradient meshes, and a "metallic rust" filter atop. Was planning to stitch this to the heart but it wasn't that good.
Not the mesh, nor the filter in that scale.

I think the faucet is very effective and realistic. The only part that doesn't work for me is the heavy black stroke on the bottom sections.

Oh, I didn't see the heart image before.  Would the faucet be inside the heart, or above it?

Amazing filters, Lazur!

Ideally the faucet could drain the ink from the container and pour it to the canvas.
But now that you mention it, the concept can take another perspective -a real landscape can be drawn inside the crystal so it would build up an "inkscape".

Stepping forward, made these recently for the filtering "manual":

-if you click on them you can read the description.
Maybe these could be collected in an article?
Don't want to "spam" this topic with it, and as it's still in development can't really estimate how long it will be.
And how would it be displayed best.
Trying to stick with the blog's layout as seen here.
One image which is 800 px wide and 500 px high, with svg source linked and paragraph next to it, maintaining the text-image proportion.
These introductionary images came out "quite ok", compared to the following ones where I'll have to put "soon to be ditched" screenshots of 0.92.
It is a challenge because of the paragraph length to write complete tutorials/organise them right.

The hosted svg-s are containing the same text outside the viewbox and with some page background, for a possible base layout for publishing as a pdf (which can be build upon for a print-ready file).

tl;dr:
I haven't started the rest of the series yet, one step at a time. Don't have a draft for the chapter titles either, although I know a direction to go by.

Wow!  Nice work!
If I would make one comment, it would be the transition from wood to lead.  Usually it's on an angle (because pencil not usually sharpened perfectly centered) (yeah, I know they use graphite these days - shame, shame - lead is much more useful).

Of course you're welcome to use the Articles/Tutorials feature here, if you like.

Hey, I didn't know you started a blog!  Did I miss the announcement?  Or you didn't announce?  Nice illiteration (I love illiteration :) )

That's the most minimalistic blog I've ever seen.  Hard to navigate to older posts, can only browse one at a time.  Lost patience trying to find the first post, to find out when you started it.

I'll get it linked up here.  And there's probably some place on the website where we could put a link, if you like.

You might as well have the manual on your blog, right?  I'll definitely add it to our collection (whenever it's finished)!

Looking forward to the filters manual.  Congrats on the blog  :D
