I'll have to figure out that Kaleidoscope LPE.  I played a little with Rotate Copies, but it takes a while to remember which options need to be used for which designs.  Just need to practice  :)

Wow, those are very naturalistic, Lazur! (and extremely complex) Great work!

Thank you!
These new blending modes really helping it.

Speaking of 0.92 somehow the one below renders off in 0.91.

Another Chrisdesign remix with fancy filtering:

Funny thing is Chris took the same route with inkscape filters around 2008.
Old paper filter, cloth filter etc.

V1nce started in 2012 and Ivan Louette also in 2008?
Is there any improvement?

Noone other really cought upon it I know of nor the filter editor got updated.
In fact current pre092 produces crashes with undoing and other bugs with it that worked in 91.
At least we have component transfer and new compositing modes. Tile primitive too but I haven't worked with that one.

That wasn't made with an lpe. Manual work as always.
Objects are different for proper overlapping. Check the svg for the details before trying to reproduce the look for hints.

Another paper filter pack.

This time the texture is the same, only the compositing differs for testing.

More info on the blog.

I can see that paper pack being used to simulate antique or historic documents!

Rather than ask how you did it (because I probably won't be able to understand) I want to ask what kind of situation someone might want to use a gradient map filter, instead of just a gradient.  I do like those colors!

For example when you make a gradient mesh and want to change the appearance in an easy way or
changing the colours of a raster image or anything that would be too complicated to do one by one.

Like this image was autotraced and consists of 2900+ objects:

Changing colours for a false  colour palette for a larger contrast, recolouring black&white images as heat maps or plots from matlab etc.
There can be alot of uses but you may need a better palette than that. Used just the Echo palette built in inkscape swatches, but if it was toned to metallic colours or to skin tones you could use it as a filter to colour something you shade with only black&white gradients.

Just realized that gradient map filter pack had some errors with 15 and 16 colours so here is a remix:

Here is a variant where the transitions were made "flat":

Oh....yeah, I totally don't understand.  It's so frustrating, because I keep putting off things that I want to study, becaue I think any minute Courtney's going to finally give us the backups, and I don't want to get busy on something else until that's finished.  (argh!)

But thanks anyway  :)

So amazing!!

If I halfway understand some of the things you've been doing with filters, I'll bet the developers would be interested to see some of it.  I think they are particularly interested to see the limits of how Inkscape performs.  And some of what you've been doing, seems to me to be pressing the limits.

You might consider posting a bug report (since you're not subscribed to the mailing list), just to show these things.  If you don't want to make a post there, I might post on the user list, and specifically linking to the last couple of pages of this thread (where most of the things I don't understand are).

Just a thought  :)

I have posted questions in the live dev channel about filter editor issues but it got zero feedback.
Current editor prevents every user from a good understanding of the use, and it prevents me from showcasing what exactly is behind.
This latest filter is made up of 157 filter primitives rigged together.
It is a tad bit hard to correct a wrong setting and improving on it.
Cannot zoom in or out, panning takes ages.
Cannot group together repeating subchains. Cannot label those and add comments here and there.
Cannot export the layout. Which looks and reacts so bad it hurts.

Bad editor prevents useage thus the number of actual users of it is small resulting in little interest from developers to improve on it.
Also in common there are no good filtered svg-s around as noone who use premade filters can tweak the settings and the resulting images are far from the top-notch quality.
Resulting people with skills abandone filters for good reasons.

Maybe I'll post bug reports on it sometime. So you say there would be interest in such images in the mailing list?

Well, the IRC is more for instant help type of things, rather than thoughtful, extended discussion.  If someone wants to dig into your filters, you might be gone by the time they finish investigating.  I'm not saying specifically on the mailing list.  I was just trying to think of the best way to show what you've been doing.  Maybe the gallery on the website, except there could be some size limitations.

If you don't want to get too involved, just post a link to some of the amazing filters, on the user mailing list.  Or again, I could do that for you.

But!  With your comments/complaints about the editor.....  If you have any suggestions how to improve the editor, that is clearly a Launchpad type of issue.  You could link to a few of your filters which test the limits, and post exactly the comments you just made, about most users not being able to figure it out, to be able to learn from looking at your examples.  And if you were to make a mock-up of a better editor -- Wow, I think that could really be well-received!  If you could make a mock-up, that could even be wiki content.  There's a way to use the wiki to make a proposal....I can't think what it's called.....  well I think it's just called a Proposal, here are examples:  http://wiki.inkscape.org/wiki/index.php/Category:Proposals.

That's the kind of thing that developers like to see.  You could always explain that you can't do the actual coding, but you'd be willing to work with devs who can.  (Or maybe you'd want  to learn about coding for the gui?)  Maybe there's a developer who is looking for new project, especially since 0.92 is about to be released.  Maybe it's a good time to start a discussion?  I know there's been a push to create a group who are interested in gui-related issues.  And that's what this is, right?  The function of the filter editor is fine, it's just the interface that needs improving -- right?

Well anyway, I think there are 2 ways your work can help the project - one to show the power of Inkscape filters, and 2, to suggest a better interface or dialog (assuming you have suggestions).  You could post on the mailing list, with links to the most powerful filters, as a way of kind of "testing the waters".  And if it looks like there's some interest, you could go ahead with putting a mockup in the wiki, and a Launchpad report.

But again, just some thoughts  :)

Thank's for the suggestions and help offer!
Guess I should join the mailing list someday.

Frankly it would be better starting it over from scratch than to add patches to the current filter editor.

On any mockups, the licensing is a roadblock. Openclipart where I would host them is public domain and cannot take other than CC0. Like not even sure if uploading the tool icons is ok with that.

Now for more hatching, filter in action:

Lazur, the Inkscape website is intended to be used for this (see https://inkscape.org/en/gallery/=ui-mockup/).
Or you can create a blueprint on a Wiki page, or at launchpad. There are plenty of options :) If you need more than the allotted 10Mb of space for your upload at inkscape.org, just ping Martin Owens or me.

Yes, I agree that the whole filters editor probably needs to be recreated from scratch.

The licensing of a mockup is entirely irrelevant (imo).  The mockup is just an example, not the real thing.  Plus, as Moini mentioned, the website gallery is designed to host mockups.  You could host it in both places, and it could have 2 licenses.  But again, for a mockup, the license isn't very important.  (well, maybe for a proprietary software, but not for open source)

Anyway, it's just that you have so much talent and experience with Inkscape by now, and especially with filters, but with lots of other areas as well.  And your understanding and knowledge could benefit the project on the development side, in addition to helping users.  I was just trying to nudge you towards becoming more involved, in case you wanted to, but maybe just need an invitation, or a little push.

Hatching with a "snowflake based pattern":

Somehow it got heavy on the rendering due to the pattern being constructed of 2000+ objects.
As used the vertical base cell of the second image of this post for the pattern's handles to be aligned horizontally and vertically.
-Marked with the yellow snowflakes. Base "tile" can be much smaller, marked with the yellow rectangle in the centre, but then the pattern's handles need to be rotated for a horizontally aligned appearance in a random angle.-

Original pattern for the hatch is here.
