Certainly it could have been better. Started out making it to have a fluid look.
But that is the way to improve -with all the failed attempts I get a better sence on making a good filter.
How was it made? You can open it in inkscape and check the filter editor...

"Soil" filter pack:

Not exactly soil looking, nor exactly good on the colouring, but again, with a bit of tweaking this one would also be good for game development for example.

If you feel sleepy, here, have some filtered coffee:

(Without the filtering it's just a single circle.)

Wow!  I'll never figure that out.  What makes the kind of scalloped edges?

Oooh, I see.  Applying it to some random rectangle tells the story!

Cold have smoothed it out by blurring but was too sleepy at the time...

Something different:

Diffuse lighting is added to a turbulance, and, on top of it are placed isolines as in a topographic map.

A looooonnng time ago, I found a filter that created something that looks like those lines.  I thought it reminded me of a topographic map.  It would take some searching to find the message, to find the name of it.  But I'm not sure it's still part of Inkscape.

Ok, curiosity was too much....  It was so long ago (8 years  :f5:), instead of Filters, Inkscape had Effects menu.  As I recall, Effects were mostly like the filters we have now, but some were kind of a cross between a filter and an extension (based on my non-technical understanding).  Some of them had dialogs, for example.

Quote (selected)
And here are the instructions:
1. Draw a path, which will look like a light duty road on your topo map, or like a hiking trail, if you change the stroke to a dashed line.
2. Effects menu > Generate from Path > Inset/Outset Halo
3. The above sample uses Width = 25.0, Number of Steps = 25.
:???:  I wonder .... if I still had an SVG file with that effect, how the status bar would identify it now.  Would 0.91 say it was a path with Inset/Outset Halo Effect?  I don't, but it would be interesting if I did still have it in an SVG file.  I wonder if 0.91 could display it at all?

Changing the subject.  Lazur I've just installed several of your filter packs.  But they all show up in 1 huge, long, scrolling, submenu called "Personal".  Would it be very hard to put them in separate sub menus?  I don't mean I'm asking you to do it.  But I'm asking if there's something I could do, to put them in relevant sub menus, for my own installation.

Guess it shouldn't be too complicated to do but to be honest I never tried adding those to the dropdown list.

The drop shadow filter has a dialog, which would be "nice to have" in some of the custom filters... or maybe not really.
Because these packs are made by tweaking the settings of the same chain, yet those settings wouldn't make much sense in a dialog alike.
Turbulance 1 slider, turbulance 2 slider, slider of component transfer... no, without a preview it's useless, noone could guess the same way in the current filter editor which settigs to change and why.

If there was a decent filter editor I guess that dropdown menu as it is today could be left out just like the gradient editor.

Oh right -- a lot of filters have dialogs.  Not sure what I was thinking  :uhoh:  (Gotta stop answering messages until after that 1st cup of coffee  )

Oh, so you never created a "Personal" submenu?  I guess all filters installed by user must go in there?

Hhmm...I think there's a way to create a new submenu for extensions.  I'm guessing it must be in the INX file.  But Filters don't have such a file.

Unless I don't understand what you mean, I don't think that menu could be left out.  People would still want to use pre-existing filters, and not make their own, even if it was easier.  Or do you mean that all the filters would be listed in a new filter editor?

Edit
I wonder if you create subfolders in filters directory??  Would Inkscape find them?  I'll try....

In the filter editor "custom" filters are listed on the left.
If there was a way the pre-made filters could be listed there as well -not just those that are saved in the svg-, somewhere so then you could access the "dropdown menu" from inside the filter editor.
Then again, the filter editor needs a complete reworking. Like, adding previews to different "sub-chains", and organising parts of the chain as like a group, the ability of labeling them and adding comments, adding custom sliders so then it would be all there if someone is interested at the exact moment for all the built in filters, and, like
you don't have to apply a built in filter, then go to the filter editor after to see how it was built and tweak the settings.

Ok, back to the menu/submenus.  When I installed your Diffuse Light filter pack, it went into ABCs submenu, and not Personal!  I wonder how that happened??

Hmm have I posted it here as well? :hmm:
Made that a while ago, guess I could improve on it.
Just a guess, it could even be started by tweaking an existing filter's setting from the dropdown list.
Maybe the names/pace interferes.

That previous isolines filter was quite close in nature to a gradient map effect.
That would be a really nice thing to have, instead now the only choice is adjusting each step manually...

So here is a 10 step spectrum for a "gradient map" effect applied on a black on white gradient:

Luminance is used for the mapping just as in gimp.

Let's see it in other action, applied it over turbulence:

The steps colours can be changed manually by editing them in flood fill primitives.
Their placement is kind of fixed on these. To do that, it would take way too much effort, editing "blindly", not seeing the intermediate effect.

This gradient mapped turbulence would definitely need to be animated.

Soo trippin'.

Made a "kaleidoscope" with that filter:

There seems to be some rendering issue that leaves some banding (?) all over the image.
Other than that, it works quite well -you can generate a ton of wallpapers with it.

Edit:

other variants

No, the Diffuse Light filters weren't uploaded in this topic.  I had installed them a while back.  But I just happened to notice they were in a different category, and I can't figure out why.  Maybe I installed Diffuse Light filter in 0.48.x, and maybe in 0.91, the devs provided the Personal category??

But if you ever figure out how it ended up in ABCs category, would you let me know?  Because that filter doesn't necessarily work only on text, and I always wondered why you put it there.  But it sounds like maybe you didn't do anything special regarding the category?

Wow!  "'scuse me while I kiss the sky" ....  better find YT video, if there are any?  Edit - found a vimeo - not a pure video, like music videos, but still the music:    Edit - live:

That's a ton of detail in the Hendrix part.  It doesn't cause lagging?

I found out how to change the filter category from Maren.  Haven't tried it yet.  But I'll post at a soon as I'm sure I understand.

Searched alot for an image to apply the filter on.
It brings out the positive side when applied on raster images as regular vectors hardly have the detail level that could be reduced such way.
But for ocal that is a no-go, needs to be all vectors.
Like there are detailed cliparts too like this one I tried first but needed it 64 times...
which didn't work.
The original image of Hendrix wasn't that detailed.
Converted it to a pattern for easier handling, and there it was.

These component transfer filter primitives can really help with recolorizing an image.

It gave me the thougt that you could use it to draw a hatched fill.

So made this as a base

and then adjusted it's tone to match with the object's luminance:

It was a hell in the making yet I would tweak it for a more decent pencil feel.
The filter editor -or my sleepiness at the moment- is preventing from it, will look at it someday (probably redraw it from scratch).

Well these hatching filters are way over the top of the current filter editor, giving a hard time even connecting the right primitives together.

Probably will start another topic on hatching in general.

Until then here are the basics:

-original image with no filters-

-two colormatrices with luminance to alpha added, so now it looks as a black aquarell paint over the background-

-after the two colormatrices component transfer is added, and the alpha channel is adjusted so it has a threshold effect-

For each tone such sources are generated, and they are used to "mask" layers of different "fills" over eachother by composite-in, and merged together.
The previous "fills" in the example above used were these.

Had made a file with the images separated into layers but somehow it didn't work.  :-S

Once it was set up right it would only take pasting objects into existing groups.

Maybe time to take a few steps back.
Like a 3 colour poster filter?

For fun, made new kaleidoscope wallpapers:

Oh, those are very nice!  Since I got my mouse fixed, I've been working on coloring pages and a couple of tutorials.  But I'm going to have install and look how you do that.  If I can figure it out, maybe I'll make some too!

Hey, did I ask you if you'd like a gallery album for these?  I think I mentioned it.  But just to be sure -- I can set up an album for filters in the gallery, if you like.  I know you like to use OCL.  But just let me know, and I can set up an album for filters.

The last one looks like tie-dye!  Weird display issue with Firefox.  Or is it Inkscape?  (see screenshots at full size)

That should be as easy as in that animation. Pull two sliders in that component transfer,
tweak the turbulence settings on the top of the chain.
Change flood colours. That's it, everything else is set up.

That is a rendering issue with cairo.
Surprisingly chrome renders some of those better, like this one.

Thank's! Yes, I prefer ocal because they have a large bandwidth and a large hosting server, that generates thumbnails of 2400 px width, using inkscape. Maybe that is too large for a thumbnail generally, and customizable thumbnail uploading has other possibilities but it takes twice the effort to upload the file, not counting the work of generating of those thumbnails.

Had also tried uploading to inkscape.org in the filter set category but they render svg-s which is painful to load in.
Also no matter there are only 4 of those svg-s in the category, the download count is at five times more at ocal.

So currently I'm not planning to mirror those but who knows? Maybe I will upload them in the future in batches if there is a need.
